11 Hour Artificial Blizzard

I was just reading the magazine, The Week and I came across a article that surprised me. The article is totally legit. Here is the excerpt from the magazines website.

Beijing

Making snow: An attempt

to relieve a severe drought in China has apparently worked too well.

Meteorologists this week shot silver iodide into clouds near Beijing,

hoping to cause rain—but what they got was an 11-hour blizzard that

buried the capital in snow, stranding millions of commuters. Still, the

Weather Modification Office declared its action a success. Scientists

in other countries were skeptical. The effectiveness of cloud seeding

is disputed, because nobody can prove that it wouldn’t have snowed or

rained even without the silver iodide.

Could this work for ski resorts?????

They have done it for years,

And this year will be the first time it has not been done in the tahoe area, due to funding cuts.

The silver iodide doesnt make it precipitate, it adds to it. They use it to make storms bigger inthe midwest to avoid droughts.

those chinese are pretty reckless, im pretty sure we dont seed our clouds with silver iodide, but we could use that in Maryland tho

this is what sunshine does because they claim they make no snow and its all natural. fuck alberta resorts this is exactly why i ski in bc.

Ive heard of cloud seeding before, pretty cool, though I bet it's far to expensive to use just because we want more snow for skiing.

When i first saw this thread i was like wtf? people make snow from snow machines all the time for 11 hrs... but thats crazy. China's fucking insane dude but if it actually helped them get outta the drought then good for them although it looks to me like it didnt help their impact on the enviornment. They already had to basically shut down beijing before the olympics so the athletes could breathe during it. Crazy Chinese people and their "technology"

well first off i believe the majority of those deaths were car accident related. chinese person who has never seen snow before (already sucks at driving) + snowy road= disaster

This is one of those things that is borderline reckless. Yes it's great to end a drought but when it messes with earth's natural way of balancing itself, it's just stupid.

repostbut would be cool for ski resorts. as the dude that posted above me said, fucking with mother nature cant be good..

I know. I'm wondering why people think this is so cool and new. It's literally nothing new. From what I understand, Vail Resorts has someone on their higher-up staff that gets paid for cloud seeding--and from what I understand he has upwards of a $500,000/year salary. No shit.

I love how there is all the bullshit that is the man made global climate change from carbon, yet were doing all kinds of crazy things to modify the weather like this.

Spraying chemicals to change the weather, dumping all kinds of pollutants into the ocean, cutting down trees for paper.

And some how people don't think anything wrong of this.

What gives us the right to mess with nature like that. Def not at all healthy for the environment

Mother nature should kick their ass
