lying around my house. anything cheap i could put in it? i have 2 fire belly toads in another and i have had multiple other reptiles, but never fish. what would be something cool/easy/cheap to use it for?

spark notes: 10 gallon tank, easy animal to put in and take care of cheap

In my 10 gallon I got a male betts, an African dwarf frog and a couple snails. I set it up really well with live plants and it's easy to take care of. Everyone got along and because little waste was produced it was easy to keep clean. The problem with 10 gallons is that it's tough to keep a lot of fish, and if your looking for ease, that's about as low maintenance you can go. The smaller the tank, the faster it gets dirty. Don't overcrowd it. I like to get artsy with my fish and I always like to put something that's colorful. Bettas are great fish, but can be violent so I just had a frog and it kept him company. They both lasted several years. Live plants are always really cool and bright rocks and good lights can make tanks look amazing. Good luck

i was thinking about getting a betta. but ive never heard of having a frog in it! how much do these dwarf frogs cost and what do they eat? and thanks for the help!

Bettas are excellent fish, and are really colorful and intelligent. I had one who lasted seven years and was easy to take care of, and recognized my voice. He would go crazy whenever I walked by/spoke because he knew I'd feed him. African dwarf frogs are basically the awesomest thing they swim around and are really small and cute. They're easy to take care of and eat normal fish food. Bettas don't feel threatened by them so they generally don't attack the frogs,

I'd also recommend getting some snails. I had them with my dwarf frog and betta and all was good. Just be sure to check with the petsmart guys before you buy.

If you are willing to put down some money, get some celestial pearl danios. I got six of them last month and they are incredible looking. They are kind of pricey for danios though, at 6 bucks a pop. Another option would be a group of ten neon tetras. You can never go wrong with those.

i used to have a plecostomus in my tank, its an algae eating catfish and it looks badass, mine grew to about 10inch in a big tank, but in a smaller one like yours they'll stay small.....

also loaches are an awesome addition, they don't need much special care, they look awesome, are very active and can live peacefully with most fish, dwarf loaches also stay kinda small and look very neat!

a kuhlii loach is also very neat but you won't see the goddamn things, they are excellent hiders and will crawl in and under anything....

+ with loaches you're populating the bottom region of your tank so you can maybe put other fish in the middle/top and maybe even some frogs or other amphibians such as axolotls which are cool as fuck !

Fish don't have stunted growth through being in a small tank. It only does if it's imbred like 10 times.

To the op: get a weather loach for the bottom of the tank, get a few guppies for a tank that small also. Don't go buying a pleco 'cause it WILL grow too big too turn around in the tank (unless you get a variant which grows to ~5" .) You could also just set it up as a guppy breeding tank ;)

gotta love the fish tank threads! fish tanks are the bomb. put some shrimp in it, that's what i have in mine, they're tight and hardy and easy to take care of.

Here is my ten gallon. The light is a 15w 6500k bulb from home depot, the gravel is flourite, but you could use soil capped with gravel and it would be cheaper. Plants are just crypts, java moss, water lettuce, java fern and valisnaria (sp). They are low light plants and they are easy as balls to keep. It has 5 celestial pearl danios in it that I'm trying to breed. My second choice was a group of 12ish neon tetras. You cant really go wrong with those things, and they are readily available.

Sorry it looks like shit right now I haven't been spending enough time on upkeep.

If you're not set on the H20 side of things, Emperor Scorpions are a pretty chill thing to have. They are one of the most social scorpions (you can have more than one), their sting isn't dangerous unless you are allergic (akin to a bee sting), and they glow neon green and pink underneath blacklights. Freshman year we had one in our dorms, Scoister Skwigelf, the Party Scorpion, and he was sick.
