1 CAMERA, 1 LENS, 1 FILM STOCK, 1 YEAR

Mamiya 6, 75mm, Portra 400.

Planning on starting the year off with a week-ish long road trip to burn through some of the 220 film currently sitting in my freezer.

Yee.

Wait, shit, I'm gonna miss shooting my 50mm. Might have to sell it just to resist the temptation to throw it on my camera at some point in the next year.

So for the thread im stuck between : Seagul 4A, with Fuji Velvia 50 or Canon AE1 with either trix or a bunch of Kodak Gold.

Opinions?

AE1, because a TLR is cumbersome. And because RVP can be shot in few situations.

gonna be using an olympus xa and superia 400 probably since it's the most readily available near my house.

Got a call from my creditcard company, they cancelled they payment, they don't trust them. Account was linked to fraud...

Maybe there was too much Barbara Palvin on my mind, tricking me in assuming that Hungary is nothing but lovely roselike perfection. I got hurt myself on it's thorns though.

Lawrence, why aren't you just using your Nikon F?

Then I might as well take the F5, the photometic finder is so xboxhuge, it's bigger then the giant carcinogenic mass on the F5, but at least that one is huge. And for the price of a Nikon F finder I'm better of just buying another F.

I need something more compact, also i use F(5)/50mm/tri-x anyway, hardly makes it a challenge.

there are no olympus xa's on canadian ebay. anyone have suggestions on where to find one? i feel like the only way i'm going to pull this off is to have a camera with me at all times

I'll sell you my kind of broken one for 20 bucks. There's a piece of the groove that the clamshell slides in cracked off, so it feels a little loose and doesn't click open as nicely as it should. Other than that it's in great shape.

I feel like it'd be a nice way to organize it all for those who are committed to the concept but I see what you're saying. Just hoping it doesn't get too cluttered. No issue with the rules though.

You think that's the way to go then, keeping it open so public can see it?

Let me know, I'll get the rules up soon!

So, Rules:

1. For the duration of the project (One year), you may use only one camera body, one lens, and one film stock. Processing methods, additional gear, etc. are all fair game. Choose wisely.

2. The 1 year period begins on January 1st, 2015, and ends on January 1st, 2016. Do not post scans of photos that were shot at any other time than between these dates.

3. On the last day of each month (or very close to it), each participant will post NO MORE THAN 5 photos in this thread (The thread I will create as the official thread). The photos posted on the last day of each month DO NOT have to have been shot, processed, and scanned only during that month, however they must have been shot, processed and scanned AFTER the photos from the previous round of submissions.

FOR EXAMPLE - If a roll is shot between March 29th and 30th, it is unlikely that that roll will be processed and scanned and posted on the 31st. We don't want to miss out on seeing those photos, if there are a couple selects in there. Those photos can be posted on April 30th, however, they are included in your 5 and are not in addition to the 5.

If you post photos from February on the last day of February, and post photos from March on the last day of March, and you find that you have neglected to scan a roll from February, those photos from that roll should not be posted in March or April.

This is intended to keep the progressive visual history of your work during the project linear throughout the thread, rather than jumping around.

4. The ONLY discussion in this thread is about the photos that are posted. All other off-topic discussion will be removed.

Any protest? Any ideas or considerations? Any flaws you see?

Less caps, they appear so angry and strict.

Add something such as resize to... 1200? on the longest end, I hate clicking on pictures in the "best of" and I suddenly have to load 24mp of grain on my phone.

I think you should be able to post five photos from whenever throughout the year each month. There might be an older photo that fits well in that particular edit. There also might be a month where somebody is traveling or just taking a ton of good photos, and another month where they're busy or in a funk or whatever. I find that rule kind of restrictive, and I don't really see the value in such a linear progression. Revisiting old shots is an important aspect of editing IMO.

Policy on upgrading a lens once the thing has started as long as it is the same focal length? My 28 mm is a pos but I don't have the money to get a different one before this starts, but definitely want to get a new one when I can (focusing to just past infinity on a wider lens kills me)

I mean, I don't really see any problem with it, as you're still learning to compose with that focal length...

Unless your'e upgrading from a 28 f2.8 to a 28 f1.4 or something insane, it shouldn't be a huge deal. Just don't go changing camera systems completely.

This makes sense to me - any other ideas or comments on rules? What do you guys think about this comment?

Personally, I would rather keep it as I wrote it, and here's why -

We're trying to really learn about our chosen system here, and a body of work presented sequentially shows process, and how you've developed. I think it's a good idea to keep it sequential so we can see that and instead of commenting just on the photos that are posted once a month on their own, we can also discuss the process of what we are learning, and point out how we see others developing. That's my take on it, and other reasons for / against?

^That makes sense. I guess the time for revisiting old shots will come at the end of the year, putting together some kind of final edit of the work that came out of this.

Carry on.

You assume that we will progress, but we won't.

But if we don't progress it will show in the photos and allow us to question why we didn't progress? it'll allow us to try and troubleshoot how to get better results. Therefore I support the linear idea.

My weapon is ready.

Overpriced and a pain in the dick to load: Deal with it.

I've been a little slow to start so somebody help me decide:

Superia 400 or gold 400?

28mm f/2.8 or 35mm f/2?

I think it would be pretty cool if everyone posted some info on what camera/film they're using and some info about themselves, like how long they've been shooting, what got you into photography, what do you like to shoot the most, why film, or if you have a main idea for what the theme will be for their project will be, if they have one. General info on the person, etc. Also, maybe a picture of what you'll be using since everyone loves to share gear pics, myself included. This could be a good way to start up the new thread and get everyone to know each other a little better since we're all doing a year long project together! Thoughts?

Camera: Voigtlander Bessa-R

Lens: CV 35mm F/2.5

Film: Tri-X

I've been shooting film for a little over two years now and shot digital for maybe a year before that. Prior to that, I had little interest in cameras, but with Level 1 I really started enjoying shooting second angles and doing follow cams and that evolved over time. I prefer film over digital because half the time I usually forget what I took pictures of by the time I develop (except for shooting 6x6) and the allure of it is intriguing. I'm also starting to gain motive in the fact you actually get to hold on to tangible negatives due to an ever so slight feeling that electricity may stop someday and I want to keep all my pictures. I chose a bessa because I can't afford a leica and it seemed like the next best bet. 28 was always my favorite focal length, but I decided I wanted to try something just a touch tighter and this 35 is a sweet lens with a super short throw. Tri-x because it's Tri-X.

We should put this in the thread, to get some interest going and keep it bumping up to the top for the first month. Also, who can sticky posts? I don't have that mod power for some reason.

Or maybe I don't know how to use it. Jamie?

Just picked up an XA. There is a very good chance that I will not contribute anything, but I suppose I will through my hat into the ring regardless.

Still undecided about which film stock to use. Utah is always sunny and it really bums me out.
