1 am blueberry thought

Just got home and plopped down at the counter to eat some blueberries and had some thoughts I’ve been meaning to put out there.

Why do rails have paint like on the sides of them. Clearly they were painted at one point but the whole top area of every rail is missing the paint where skis make contact with it. Like that’s exactly what’d you’d expect, skis and boards knock off any paint they contact. But like, how does a rail get like that, surely you can’t grind a rail with a coat of paint right on top unless if it’s freezing cold. Maybe u can and I’m just tripping, but if anyone with park crew experience can explain this please share.

ps - I had a really good burger for dinner

Your right op gonna start coating my rails with this cool stuff instead of paint should be way slicker

Going to get hired by a park crew and spray the rails with bed liner

Fuck them kids

What a coincidence I spilled my blueberries all over the kitchen counter at 1 am last night, too. So I painted the counter in blueberry juice and jibbed it just fine (one side effect: my bases are now red)

Some places paint just the bottom half of the tube. I think it looks super clean. I think Keystone does this. Breck will paint the bottom of the ‘propane tanks’ white to slow down the spring melt out

I know park crew every summer goes through all the rails and smooths out all the damage taken from a year in the park. Then they either repaint the whole thing or just apply a clear coat to prevent rust. I got a box and a couple rails from park crew that got retired. One they knew wasnt going to be used again after the season and the other had sat in the railyard. The one that sat was touched up with the intent to use it again but didnt so it was in way better shape when i got to take it home the other one was so hard to touch up cause I only have a sander and not an angle grinder it worked decently well.

So like the top is usually grinded then sealed unless ur park crew is a bunch of brexit ass mfers. Rest of the tube or rail should be painted blah blah. But if you’re park crew is full of a bunch of bloaks like mine and they paint the top of the tube or tail it sucks to slide until it’s almost all scratched off

My soccer team has taught me to use brexit as a insult. Tbh I like it. Cool side note my dad did live in England when he was little for I think 3 years and Ringo Starr lived close and would play soccer with him and his brother and throw pebbles with them.

Blueberry season is great, glad you got some freshies.

Paint is on the rails to prevent rust and for branding (why resorts always use the same colour scheme for all their features except sponsored or signature pieces).

It's usually a really hard kind of enamel paint, so it is slippery enough to grind although obv. not as slippery as bare steel. As a park manager, I'll always wax or spray veg. oil on newly painted rails because they can feel stickier than some people want.

Most places with heavy traffic refurbish and re-paint the features they're going to use for the season in the fall to keep everything fresh. After a few dozen hits on a rail most of the paint will be scraped off the top. If you're ambitious, you can run an experiment on a newly painted rail where everyone hops or does a switch up at the same spot and see how long the patch of untouched paint lasts.

so they don't rust, like imagine if your car was just raw steel

It's a great look, but yeah you gotta treat the parts you don't want to show rust.
