There really are no words to describe what a loss this is. Shane was a living legend. The first time I heard his name was during the Look Ma mogul challenge in Vail. I have no clue what year it was, but it went down something like this:
This was an oldschool head to head mogul comp. Shane squibbed out, crossed the center line and knew he was DQ'd. He was pissed, but decided to wow the crowd by throwing a backflip off the lower kicker. At that time inverts were strictly prohibited at Vail. Shane got in trouble and I think someone ripped his ticket off and told him to get off the hill. In protest, Shane hiked back up to the top of Lookma. He stripped down, skied the course naked, and threw another back flip at the bottom (BNBF - Butt Naked Back Flip).
No nutty shit that I do for the rest of my life can hold a candle to that. It sucks to lose him. I don't know about the rest of you, but I am going to think about the BNBF and go to sleep laughing. RIP Shane.
RIP Shane, we'll miss your amazing influence on the sport and only take solace in the fact that you died doing what you truly loved. Shred forever buddy.
