Your thoughts on the Sony HDR-FX1?

Ok, so I'm looking for a new camera to step my game up a little bit and I was seriously thinking about getting a HDR-FX1. Just wanted to know if anybody used it or has had comments about it. Pros and cons would be appreciated and tell me some of your personnal experiences with it. I want to know if it's worth to spend that amount cash for the camera?

no man, I'm not dealing coke haha. I've been saving up for a long time. And I currently have a gs300, but have used some vx100 and gl2 with no problem at all. I need a good camera to film events.
 
i havn't worked much with the fx1 but i have a friend that has 1 and he likes it. i have the fx7, it's a lot smaller but has 3cmos vs. 3ccd which, if i'm not mistaken, the fx1 has. 3cmos is supossed to be the better of the 2 for picture quality. The fx7 also gets a little bit higher optical zoom. The price for both is pretty much the same but i can tell you that the fx7 is VERY user friendly, easy and quick to control.

you might also consider getting an HVX, amazing camera as well. And Panasonic cameras get some of the best color out of any cameras there are, HD or not.

fx1 would be a good choice but you should also check out the fx7 and the hvx (i think panasonic makes the hvx)
 
because if you're going to get an HD camera it really isn't worth it yet.. not until everyone has HD dvd players with HD tv's, or else it isn't HD at all.

And Sean, I would also be able to film in DV mode with the FX1. Plus, I can get it brand new for less than 2000$.
 
for that kind of price you might want to be careful and make sure it's legit. there shit tons of scams out there
 
Yea I know, I thought it was not legit at first, but I checked out if it was and looks all good.
 
Get a DVX instead

The fx1 records in HDV, which is not true HD. then it compresses it on to a mini dv tape so you are limited by the quality of the tape. 'HD' tapes are pretty expensive. And you don't want to be reusing them. Basically only go HD if you are capturing to a hard format.

The only advantage you are getting out of the fx1 is a sharper image. In my opinion film is about so much more then just that. Colors and motion tracking are much more important to me. The DVX has better color controls then the fx1 and can capture deeper and richer colors then the fx1. I also think that the motion tracking on the fx1 is horrible. The result is that the video will have a fake feel to it. Video from a DVX is so much smother and deeper then from an fx1. And that is much more important then the sharpness of the image.
 
uhhh, you better be really sure about that. $2000 for a new Fx1 is not legit. Maybe used, but not new.

Just get a good used Fx1, it's a kick ass camera in the right hands.
 
oh, thanks for that! Maybe I could buy the FX1 and resell it to get an HVX. I thought the HDV would be quality, but if you're telling me that the colors are soso then I'd be better off with the HVX because I'm looking for a camera that has real good color before all. And when you're saying that the image looks fake, what to do you mean? Do you have any example?
 
I Don't have an example, But what I am tryibg to say is that while it is tracking a motion it looks as if the object that is moving (relative to the camera) is jumping instead of having a smooth movement. The HVX (and DVX) has a much smoother and cleaner out product. The Same applies to colors, if not more so. On the HVX you get a smooth transition between colors (with out losing contrast). On the fx1 it does not transition well. Basically The FX1 gives a cheap fake feel while the HVX and DVX provide a nice deep feel.

Go watch stuff by isenseven. All shot on an HVX and all amazing.
 
It's something like 60-70% of americans currently own an HD TV in their home at this point in time. Pretty soon, everything will be HD.
 
i say dont worry about going HD yet. cause unless you can make HD DVD'S and the people watching your stuff have the ability to watch in HD its just not worth it. if you like the sony look, get a vx2100, honestly the picture looks extremely similar. or a DVX, just cause they are awesome. if you have to go HD id say go for a canon xha1. but i really thiink HD is kinda overrated, especially with prosumer cameras, most the time the only difference your gonna see is more sharpness (which i think is bad if anything) and more resolution. neither are "better" its just another aspect of filming and too much or too little can be a bad thing. hell id rather watch super 8 footage than any HD footage any day, and that has shit for resolution, but it doesnt matter cause it looks awesome and it works great for alot of stuff.
