Your Best Photography

I probably would if you were closer, but the whole 15 hours away in a different country thing is a bit of a problem. There's actually dust on my 5D and 24-70 right now, I've just been shooting with my 4x5 view camera lately.
 
50mm f/1.8 attained... thursday=loonie portraits of the homeless and sex trade workers of the Lower East Side. Hopefully me and my camera come out intact.

epicccccccccccccccc, puttin the digital crew to shame. Are those textures done directly to the negative or through the printing process somehow?
 
On the first one I put black calligrapher's ink on the emulsion side, pressed it against a magazine, then pulled it off after a second or so. You can see the texture of the paper and magazine ink along the edges.
For the second I donned long sleeves, safety goggles, chemical gloves, and a bandana over my face and brought out my bottle of 98% sulfuric acid. I painted it on the plastic side of the negative and let it sit for about 45 seconds so the spots where it pooled would pull the surface together into little plastic ridges.

holy tits thats some of the best non computer fiddled B+W's I've seen in a long time. excellent. what are the titles? mind on fire and crown of thorns?
 
I don't have individual titles for any of them yet, but the series is 'What Lies Dormant.' What I'm trying to do is suggest possible physical manifestations of what we suppress and are subverted by, so the interaction of the film plane and the subject are what I'm working with.

I'm in the midst of what will be my biggest upload ever, a bunch of shots from a restaurant kitchen here in Vancouver (Maenam). Check out the first batch on my flickr (link in sig)
 
First up two sequences. Photos shot by my father, but put together by me. I know they are a little rough, it was really my first time trying anything like this out. If anyone has any tips, itd be greatly appreciated.

This one i thought turned out well, with the exception of the last frame, he had too much spray and i was having trouble blending it.

As always, criticism is welcomed. All of these were shot with a point and shoot, cause i cant afford a good DSLR right now.

 
Oh and this one, probably the angriest i have ever been when i look at the result of the photo.

nice posts ben, especially the cat ones. sequences will come. I appreciate art so much more now that I take photos and am doing a sculpture class this spring.

as an art thread, please give me feedback on an idea. A barcelonan spanish professor at my school is a bit of a lovable, gruff alcoholic, and he barks like a dog. I'm doing a mixed media portrait of him and a dog, combined. for added texture, I'll be using dinner jacket tweed. what else to do?

and I just realized how many weird threads I made while I was high for 2 weeks. but I still love CFerg.

This was shot at f/5.6, which is equivalent to about f/1.7 on 35mm at the same focal length. With a front tilt I was able to get the stool, her hand, her eyes, and the top of the lights all in focus.
Or for a different effect I can tilt the front standard back for selective focus and do a front swing to get the cord sharp again.

soooo, in essence you can rotate the plane which is being exposed allowing for an angular focal plane rather than a perfect vertical? Is this the same effect that one gets from a tilt-shift lens or am i missing this altogether?
 
With a view camera you have a front and rear standard, which are what allow you to correct for basically anything. The rear corrects perspective and is where you put the film. If a building is keystoning on the ground glass or a vanishing point is too dramatic (or not enough), you can either tilt or swing to correct it.
The front is what controls the focal plane. With a 35mm or most medium format cameras you are stuck with the film and focal planes running parallel to each other, but with large format you can do whatever with it. The relationship of front movements and the focal plane is explained by the Schiempflug principle:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scheimpflug_principleFor example, if I wanted to get everything from 1' in front of the camera out to infinity in focus, I don't have to stop down to f/64 to do it. I can just do a front tilt and, depending on the situation, I could open up several stops and get things even sharper than I could with a vertical focal plane.
I shot both those photos at f/5.6, which at that distance probably only gave me an inch or two of sharpness. Adjustments give a lot of room for bringing something else to a photo, but they also give a hundred new ways to totally screw it up.
