Really? I'm impressed. Exposure must have been 20+ seconds.

25 sec ISO 800 and f/3.5

I was writing an article for work and wanted to see what the limits were that would allow you to get a decent image. that was the limit

It's been a while. Shots from autumn in New Zealand.

Sounds like there's some desire for critique, so I'm going to go for it. i think we should be building a community that values peer feedback beyond "nice!"

Just some shots from summer

I think a big thing missing here is interesting perspective and lighting. Those are 2 things that can really bring landscapes to the next level.

For example, the first one, the lighting is harsh mid-day sun. This blows out the falls a bit. Sunrise/sunset/golden hour provide nice soft light, and more interesting tones.

The composition is fine. No glaring flaws IMO, but the perspective looks to be chest level shot at a normal focal length. Carrying over the composition to a wide shot down low, or long to "compress" the FG and the falls could help make a stronger photo

Similar things could be said about the later two

Nice one Emily! I like it alot, although I'd bring up the foreground a bit. it's a tad bit underexposed for me

This is pretty weak compositionally. Lots of cut off pieces, and it seems to be focused on the right brake lever rather than the head badge, which I guess should be the focal point

Do people want critique in here nowadays? I haven't been active in here in a while

I would suggest that anyone who posts request critiques on their photos if they want help improving. That might keep people who just want to share from getting butt hurt by those offering unwanted criticism.

Yes. If you're posting a photo on a public forum, you should EXPECT critiques. If you don't want negative criticism on a photo, stick to posting it on your mom's Facebook wall so she can tell you how wonderful you are. Receiving critiques/criticism is the only way you'll improve your photography.

Agree with Sklar - great capture, just boost the foreground a bit!

Brought a near-dead battery camping :)))))

So I made due with my iPhone 5s to catch the sunrise atop Mad River Glen this morning. Critiques welcome!

I'll critique the second one, I like the shot although there are a few things I would change. First off it seems underexposed, Id brighten the shadows and darken the highlights a little. The composition looks good, but I'd go for a much lower angle so that those rocks in the foreground are much closer, almost rest the cam on the ground. A few things you could do in post as well, straighten the horizon a little and bring up the saturation and the reds saturation to strengthen the sunset effect.

The deer shot is fantastic!

If you want to improve your mountain shots, do what a good friend of mine (who specializes in landscapes) preached to me. Foreground! Foreground! Foreground! It creates a sense of scale and interest. It gives the image a place to begin instead of just seeing half of a mountain. Trees, rocks, roads, reflections in water...all would make good foreground. Give that roughly the bottom third of your images with the main subject filling the rest. Try that and see what you think next time you're out shooting.

Agreed! That particular shot is more reflective of my obsession with the minimalist style of the work of people like Adrian Pirlet, a style I've been playing around with a lot in the past year or two and really enjoy.
