I saw this on my Facebook today. Pretty interesting read. and interested on NS's opinion.

Young people who smoke cannabis run the risk of a significant and irreversible reduction in their IQ, research suggests.

The findings come from a study of around 1,000 people in New Zealand.

An international team found those who started using cannabis below the age of 18 - while their brains were still developing - suffered a drop in IQ.

A UK expert said the research might explain why people who use the drug often seem to under-achieve.

For more than 20 years researchers have followed the lives of a group of people from Dunedin in New Zealand.

They assessed them as children - before any of them had started using cannabis - and then re-interviewed them repeatedly, up to the age of 38.

Having taken into account other factors such as alcohol or tobacco dependency or other drug use, as well the number of years spent in education, they found that those who persistently used cannabis suffered a decline in their IQ.

The more that people smoked, the greater the loss in IQ.

The effect was most marked in those who started smoking cannabis as adolescents.

For example, researchers found that individuals who started using cannabis in adolescence and then carried on using it for years showed an average eight-point IQ decline.

Stopping or reducing cannabis use failed to fully restore the lost IQ.

The researchers, writing in the US journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that: "Persistent cannabis use over 20 years was associated with neuropsychological decline, and greater decline was evident for more persistent users."

"Collectively, these findings are consistent with speculation that cannabis use in adolescence, when the brain is undergoing critical development, may have neurotoxic effects."

One member of the team, Prof Terrie Moffitt of King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry, said this study could have a significant impact on our understanding of the dangers posed by cannabis use.

"This work took an amazing scientific effort. We followed almost 1,000 participants, we tested their mental abilities as kids before they ever tried cannabis, and we tested them again 25 years later after some participants became chronic users.

"Participants were frank about their substance abuse habits because they trust our confidentiality guarantee, and 96% of the original participants stuck with the study from 1972 to today.

"It is such a special study that I'm fairly confident that cannabis is safe for over-18 brains, but risky for under-18 brains."

Robin Murray, professor of psychiatric research, also at the King's College London Institute of Psychiatry but not involved in the study, said this was an impressive piece of research.

"The Dunedin sample is probably the most intensively studied cohort in the world and therefore the data are very good.

"Although one should never be convinced by a single study, I take the findings very seriously.

"There are a lot of clinical and educational anecdotal reports that cannabis users tend to be less successful in their educational achievement, marriages and occupations.

"It is of course part of folk-lore among young people that some heavy users of cannabis - my daughter callers them stoners - seem to gradually lose their abilities and end up achieving much less than one would have anticipated. This study provides one explanation as to why this might be the case.

"I suspect that the findings are true. If and when they are replicated then it will be very important and public education campaigns should be initiated to let people know the risks."

Sparknotes: Weed might be tied to reducing IQ.

it's true. i took some marijuanas by sharing needles with my friends. later on that day some of my friends turned gay with the AIDS and some died.

i'm the lucky one who got away with being a vegetable for the rest of my life.

Now here's a thought: Is it the smoking that is causing the reduced IQ or is it the reduced IQ that is causing the smoking?

I honestly believe this and that alcohol does the same. One of my friends who was 100% straight last year started to slowly use marijuana, eventually he was smoking in the morning, lunch, and after dinner, turned south and he became a drug dealer, always wanting to get high and nothing else. I couldn't even have a straight convo with this idiot it was like he was perma-baked. Just lost him a week ago for 20 years since he got the brilliant fucking idea to rob a conveniant store and he got caught. I agree with this article.

There was a 60 Minutes story a little while back and the scientist that was being interviewed said that Marijuana will ultimately make you a less happy person because it overwhelms your endorphin receptors, ultimately destroying them.

I mean it's definitely been proven that smoking before the age of 15-16 is not good for you. Most people know that as somewhat of a given...

kinda the same as lifting weights before your body+muscles have fully grown and developed :(

butttttt moderate smoking is proven to increase brain function

heavy smoking is proven to decrease brain function

and don't forget that smoking cannabis and using cannabis are not the same...

fully 100% believe this article....look back to high school and the kids who blazed 24/7 and look at what most of them are doing now...generally nothing and still smoking weed...not to say all weed smokers arent succesful.

I feel like weed affects everyone definitely, I mean like if your already super smart to begin with and you smoke some ganja you'll probably be okay. And i feel like the kids that become huge burnouts would become huge burnouts anyways

all i know is that the marijuanas is bad. i once injected a few pots and had to get both legs amputated. my friend did 3 pots in an hour and obviously theres no coming back from that. He straight-up OD'ed. I also know a guy who got syphilis from doing ONLY ONE marijuana. It's seriously scary.

It doesn't state how much they smoked and when they started smoking, and did they use any other substances other than just marijuana. My guess is they did. I would like to see what the decline in IQ is if you drink a fifth a day from age 15 to 27. My dad smoked a lot of marijuana back in his day and today he has a very successful job and makes a good. living. A lot of people were pot heads and have made verry successful careers. Its not marijuana that determines who you are as a person. I would It's you yourself who determines what you you do with your life. We need more than just one study to determine what is going on here. It could end up being like Ronald Regan's marijuana monkeys where they pumped the equivalent of 60 joints a day of smoke into the monkeys face and suffocated them concluding that marijuana killed braincells.

I also did a study.

The results were astounding.

100% of the participants said that anyone who still makes and/or finds funny the "I took a few marijuanas and did some pots then got aids" type jokes should be lined against a wall and shot.

Results don't lie people.

I don't have an issue with the joke but the punchline "then i got aids" or "now i'm gay" is more worn out than Octomom's snatch

Here is a thought, maybe the kids who smoked weed were didn't try in school after they started and never exercised there mind to make it achieve it full potentiol so at age 12 it was on track but at 38 they had been less smart relitive to othere 38 year olds because they stopped getting smarter cause they were to damn blazed. So maybe the weed dosen't make them dumb the lake of modivation, i.e the effect, does. so if you smoke weed on sunday but still try at getting smarter your IQ stays the same.

Ya heard it here first. Preach it brotha.

I dont think we will fully understand the effects both good and bad of cannabis for another 30+ years...

we have no idea what the compounding effects may be...

The media goes bonkers over studies that point out relationships, not causality. I doubt very much that the study actually proves that smoking weed causes lower IQ's, seems more to highlight a relationship that may be influenced by other outside factors they could not control for.

Did you even read the article? Its a study looking at heaps of different aspects of people, and it was adjusted for other factors, INCLUDING ALCOHOL, pretty much isolating the influence of cannabis. They found people that smoked under the age of 18 lost on average, around 8 IQ points.

Just becasue your dad has a sick job and got high, doesn't mean a scientific study is garbage. No one said in the study that it's going to determine your life, they even said that no bad effects seemed to occur after the age of 18. Everyone knows successful people that smoke lots of weed.

Just because it says that a cannabis can be bad in some situations for some people, doesn't mean that the study is rigged, or slanted, or has an agenda, or that marijuana will kill you. Its just found a correlation suggesting you should think twice about smoking a shit-ton of weed while your brain is growing like a balloon.

Seriously this, whenever somebody posts and article like this it seems like everybody has this type of response. "WELL, I know somebody who smokes weed and it didn't effect them like this...STUDY IS OBVIOUSLY 100% FALSE." I mean come on, even if this is just one study...I'm sure it is a lot more accurate than your stoner perception of smoking weed.
