X-Games Slopestyle Live Thread

Do you guys hear yourselves?Tom Wallisch didn't qualify. Big fucking deal.

He's still filming a dope segment this year.

Oh and did you notice something while riding tom's dick?

His run was not as good as schlopy's.

He planted his hands into the ground, losing all the clean landing style from before.

You want to know why the judges didn't bump his score up?

Because we aren't snowboarding, a sport where results are run by corporate interests. Sure, we all want Tom to win, but not because he is Tom Wallisch, super cool guy. It's because he has the techiest rail tricks, the cleanest landings, good jump skills, and dopest style ever. Lets say the judges had bumped his score into 85 or so. This puts skiing at X Games/Olympics in a position where it can show off some top athletes, who just happen to be sponsored by Red Bull, Toyota, Target, whatever. They don't even have to have the best run, they just need to be marketable. Oh look! Bobby Brown, sponsored by Red BUll has just won his 6th X Games Gold!!!!!!1!1!!!! He did a double cork 12 with a MUTE WOWWW!!!!

And he slid out! WHAT?

Yeah thats why we don't bump scores in skiing. Because we don't want Shaun White to boot grab to a win, again. There's a reason why Slope is exciting to watch. Lets keep it that way.

Still sad about Tom though, I wish he was in finals.

Hahaha so much fucking butthurt in this thread over fucking QUALIFIERS. It's not even the finals and you retards are bitching that you missed half of a 13th place run. Then you all whine and complain that Tashawnda Willymagnets didn't make the finals even though you actually DID get to see that run and know that he didn't deserve it. Holy shit.

but it's in the X games, which is definitely run by an enormous company whose no. 1 goal is to make money. i feel like a lot of people aren't necessarily mad he didn't qualify, just surprised given the track record of judging in the x games, especially when it comes to the hyped-up athletes.

I think what most people are pissed off about is that ESPN decided to cut to the Snowboard street twice during the qualifiers, rather than sticking with just the skiing.

Does anyone remember who threw the dub 7 over the second jump??? bright orange skis, maybe it was a dub 9 but i got sick footage of it with my phone

Well, I guess what it comes down to is 99% of this site needs to realize that we are not the only demographic watching the X-Games. I'm sure there are probably a bunch of snowboarders somewhere complaining that they kept putting on the ski slope while they were trying to watch the snowboard street competition. It goes both ways. Skiing is not the only sport represented.

He tweaked it hard during his 1st run of the Grand Prix at Copper (not the Dew Tour) only 2 weeks ago and may have torn his MCL and is wearing a brace for the first time ever! Considering he just started doing some tricks yesterday in slope practice, I'm amazed at how well he did and just relieved he didn't injure himself furthar on that fall he took. I still think he deserved to make it to finals!! Hopefully he'll be completely healed for Euro X!

On another note, The greatest reaction goes to Andreas!! That man is the happiest guy ever and makes me :) He's just joyous and I hope he wins tbh!

What I think WillStart is trying to say is that the X-Games is one of the biggest marketing events gone right.

Has the X-Games been bad for skiing? No.

Does the X-Games "rig" judging? Who's to say.

Would it surprise me if athletes with the biggest sponsors land on the podium? No.

The last point is a double edge sword. One side is that the athletes with the biggest sponsors are the best in the sport. And that is almost always true. The other side is, the biggest sponsors are also some of the biggest advertisers during the X-Games. Is there a conspiracy? Probably not. I'm sure no one is telling the judges who needs to be in the finals.

That being said, the X-Games (and most TV for that matter) is all about story lines. Story lines drive ratings which drive advertising dollars. Better story lines theoretically better ratings which equals more money.

Shaun White's perfect score last year is a good example. There wasn't a clear challenge other than iPod. Shaun was going to cruise to another gold medal and that's not really an intriguing story line. Now, throw in a perfect score and now every year after you have the story line "can Shaun White repeat history?" because if he cruises to a gold it becomes a foregone conclusion (if there is such a thing) and therefore not an interesting story line.

Just my two cents, I'm probably wrong on several points. That's just the way that I'm seeing it coming from an advertising/marketing background.

I'd agree with that. I love that octo-grab he does. He really has great style and def. deserved 1st place in my opinion. Very fun to watch.

Haha whatever, dude. I'm not gonna continue to argue over 4 missed prelim runs or whether or not the pretzel man deserved a spot in the finals. Carry on.

imagine reading this 5 or 10 years ago

anyway... yeah the judging was questionable at times but im realllly glad im not a judge there. the sport is by nature extremely hard to score in such a way, and let's face it, 99% of the runs were pretty much the same

holy wow, i went to the gym and when i get home and log back into newschoolers, boom 4 more pages of butthurt. love how this escalated haha

More or less.

Kids just forget that the X Games doesn't exist as some sort of gift to the extreme sports community so we have competitions to watch. It exists to make money for ESPN. Obviously for that reason, it's beneficial for them when the more well-known athletes make it into the finals. My roommate knows nothing about park skiing and the only one he's heard of is Wallisch. Now that Wallisch is out, I doubt he'll take much interest in the finals, so they're losing some viewership. So given past suspicious scores like shaun white's 100, it wouldn't have surprised me if the judges had bumped Schlopy out to keep Wallisch in the competition.

So pipe finals are on during snowboard big air. I'm assuming they're gonna show all of snowboarding cause ShAwnNN Wh1te is gonna do teh trippplez.

i think considering he's injured tom threw together a banger run

it might be in his best interests that he didnt qualify so he can heal up and focus on filming

still a bummer though

i was expecting wallisch to make it with a mediocre run and people come on here complaining about it how we all complain about shaun white but instead its the exact opposite

I recorded the event while I was skiing and I'm just watching it now. Holy shit Uncle E sounds like a 10 year old with ADD. "You don't want to land on the rails", "Three A's in Canada, A A A. The things he says are completely irrelevant and dumb. Luke Van Valin actually knows what the hell he's talking about. Hopefully X Games realizes how pointless it is to keep Uncle E commentating, and hires LVV.

Not trying to start a fight with you but do you realize how many times we get to watch skiers we may or may not look up to on t.v.? Maybe twice a year. So of course Im gonna watch everything even if it's qualifiers.
