X-games drug testing question...

I dont believe they test for the Xgames, and about juicers I doubt there any. I dont think it would have the same affect as it would on baseball or football.

why not? x-games athletes need to be incredibly strong to do the things they do, and (if used properly) juice would be a HUGE advantage

mmmmm not so much.

you dont need to be incredibly strong for "action" sports. its much more about repetition, muscle memory. Flexibility, balance, and air sense all out weigh muscular strength IMO.

I began heavy leg workouts at the gym about a year ago and then do make a pretty substantial different beleive it or not. I don't take steroids or any of that but i would imagine that would make you stronger still.

well we all know that if they tested for recreational drugs there would be no x games at all, as the only people left would be andreas, jossi, and eero eetala.
haha.

what about core strength and leg strength?

you need some pretty incredible core strength to ski half-pipe at a highly competitive level.

Haha don't forget Jon, Charles and Bobby

But yeah I don't think steroids or anything like that would help much, you do need strength but not like that. Toned muscles would be much more important as well as flexibility and muscle memory as stated above.

not to mention steroids are excellent for injury recovery, and with the inherently dangerous nature of this sport athletes constantly find themselves getting banged up from crashes.

I'm not supporting the use of steroids... I just feel like it is a very good possibility that some of these athletes may be on the juice, and testing should be done (if it isn't already)

Testing should not be done do you realize how many people would not be able to compete because of recreational drug use. This is skiing MOWfucKA they aint getting all hyped up on that shit. You need to go chill and blitzed.

Skiing may gain a little credibility on the national scale if they implement some sort of drug testing in a competitive series (like the x-games or dew tour). Maybe then there will be a better chance for ski half-pipe to get into the OLYMPICS!

(I don't care about recreational drugs, I should have mentioned this... I am more interested in the drugs of performance enhancing variety, and whether or not they do testing for those drugs... I could care less if tanner hall blazed a super-blunt before his pipe run, more power to him)

^ I can see your point the problem however is that I don't think that the committees or whatever that would be responsible for these testings would overlook recreational drug use. Look what happened to Danny Kass at the last winter Olympics.

So then why do they drug test aerial skiers in global events? Or gymnastics people?

In a basic sense, skiing takes strength so being juiced would help you.

exactly. every coach ive ever talked to has told me to lift weights. look at any pro skier, theyre in really good shape and work out regularly. steroids would naturally make you better.

Yea if steriods are used properly they could give you a huge edge. Contrary to popular belief steriods dont have to make you some 6'4" monster with massive arms and chest (they're are many diferent kinds, and taking different amounts and doing different work outs yeild different results). If you work out properly properly towards say skiing, you could put on 10 pounds of muscle get super cut and have a massive adv (more power on take offs, landings and through trannies). Also they do prescribe steriods for injuries, for example and not saying they did because I have no idea but T halls ankle breakage could have warrented them.

incredibly strong??....not so much

roids usually produce bulky muscles which would weigh down a skier. Skiers need core strength, I dont think roids will help with this. But I am not Mark Mcguire.

steroids produce the kind of muscles you want them to produce, you don't just suddenly become a beefcake when you take roids. Say a skier takes roids and does 1000 crunches daily(exaggeration/simplification), his core will be pretttty strong.

i doubt they care enough to actually do steroids but if they tested for weed they would probably not have an x games
P.S. I Love Weed

Iv been wondering lately if they do. It really wouldn't surprise me if they did. If half pipe would be in the Olympics I think they would test them and treat them like any other Olympic athlete.

I don't think any of the professional skiers would ever use drugs to up their performance in a competition. I mean, they are all good friends, and i bet they would rather beat each other by actually being better than beating each other by using drugs.

On the other side, i bet some of the athletes smoke a bunch of weed during the competitions, but i'm not sure if that actually makes you a better skier. You might get the mentality to do good, but it might make things worse for others.

This is true. A friend of mine drank 3 redbulls in a day and failed his drug test for US National Speedskating Championships.

I think that stat isn't an accurate one, I think it takes aim at your everyday I'm going to work out to get huge guys and body builders as they can develop muscles through steriods that are too strong for tendons and ligaments. In theroy tho if taken right they should reduce risk of injury and like it was stated earlier doctors do prescribe certain types of steriods to people recovering from injuries such as broken bones and torn ligaments

well you are right about doctor's prescribing to people with injuries, they do help in situations, but taking them when you're not injured, and to make you stronger does increase your chance of injury simply because steroids make the muscle grow, nothing else. thats why all the pro athletes have switched to HGH because that makes everything grow.

anabolic steroids weaken your ligaments substantially, but that is because you are putting increased stress on them because your muscles grow so much.

yeah i wish people would laugh more at my weed comment, but since nobody is saying anything in here about this i guess ill speak up from the medical point of view.
steroids cause a lot more problems than you think, including the structural weakening of things like bones and connective tissue. along with other issues, i doubt that blatant or over the top steroid use is a big problem in this sport, mostly because of the health issues. you have to be flexible, as well as have a body resistant to impact, which steroids would not be conducive too.
a lot of you are also only thinking of anabolic steroids. i think that those are probably out of the picture. maybe something more along the lines of, loosely prescribed cortisone shots or something, would be more realistic. remember simon crashing to flat from 40ft out of the QP last year? i think his doc did something like that to his heels. either way, its not our place to guess what these athletes do with their own docs. they could be getting something that is considered "performance enhancing" for a prior or current injury. of course this blurs the ethical lines if they compete while on the substance.
for a sport with no money and most athletes in their late teens/early twenties, as well as the competition being based on things that performance enhancing drugs usually do not help, i think its probably not the biggest issue.
as for testing, i do think it would help the legitimacy of the sport, although they always throw in all "illegal" substances, including your run of the mill pot and coke and shit, which of course many many athletes in the x games would fail.

The problem with that is that if they start testing for performance-enhancing drugs, they'd be going with the World Anti-Doping Agency's prohibited list because it's basically the standard.

The list is here:http://www.wada-ama.org/en/prohibitedlist.ch2

And for some reason, weed (and heroin!?) somehow counts as a performance-enhancing drug.

in the words of robin williams, the only way that weed could be a performance enhancing drug would be if there was a big fucking hershey bar at the end of the half pipe.

nope, i think its a silly idea. one of the things people love about freestyle skiing is how few boundaries there are on it.

Haha... yeah Barry Bonds and Roger Clemons are not real big fans of your thread lol.

Juice would certainly not hurt any of the Athletes.. I bet those mono board guys are all juicing.
