Jeff of theory-3 uses a Sony VX2000 but i think hes getting a Panasonic Ag dvx1000, anything 3 chip miniDV is pretty sick

there are a lot of new digital cameras coming out in the next year or so (hdv, 24p cameras, etc). if you are buying a camera to shoot next winter you should wait as long as possible to purchase it because prices on the current mini dv leaders (sony vx2000/pd150, gl2/xl1, dvx100) will most likely drop drastically.

 
Get the Panasonic Ag dvx1000. That's what everything that isn't film will be shot on next year.

i doubt the panasonic dvx-100a will go down that much, the A is the newest revision on the current hardware, and its already carring the 24p shooting mode with majorly impressive manual gamma settings for a sub 4000 camera

HD should be cool, but its gonna take awhile to be adopted. FINAL CUT just came out in HD, but its gonna be hit or miss for like i year i bet, like dvd burning first was

Today at NAB panasonic showed this prototype HD camera that will work off of flash media (not tapes) and is likely to be prices in the $3,000 range. The camera is going to be HD, which aside from the resolution means it will be true widescreen, and the camera will most likely shoot 24p like the dvx100 and dvx100a, so i'm sure once this sucker is released the price of the dvx100a will def. drop. i'm not sure if the image will show up (never tried to post one before) so heres the url...

that cam probably won't be out for a while (late 2005?), so if you're looking to get something right away and can spring the $$$ id go with the dvx100a like h30 said above.

^ agreed, thats almost the same handle as my super8 camera. HD seems really good and all, but i worry mostly about it being widely ADOPTED. im gonna wait a season then see about it. FCP HD is a good step toward it becoming a viable option though. Until then, my Panasonic dvx-100a is more then fit for the job

yeah, the panasonic high def is mos def the greatest digital video camera ever. And the pan. is way better than the sony, simply because of the handle.

you should definitely invest as much money as you can into your cam though

because more expensive cameras will have a drastic difference in video quality and features

versus cheaper cameras...

I have a GL2. They are super dope. Great for stability and the SOny one's are great also. Check ebay but make sure it's new.

 
if you really want the best camera for your money, get a canon XL1S, because its more customizable than any camera out there right now and it produces ridiculous quality in frame mode. here are three pics of just a few things you can do with it, the first pic is the standard camera:

those setups are 20,000 and over...and at that point u can get a 24p cinema camera...granted its not as small, but dont ever buy an xl1s and buy that much in accessories, its like buying a KIA and putting a ferrari engine in it, just buy the nicer of the two

good god why would anyone want to carry that lense around skiing?! that must weigh 10 pounds in itself, let alone the camera. not that it matters to me, i cant afford anythign near that good, i'm workin with a sony digital8 home movie making kinda deal right now, and it shows in the video quality for sure

 
im sure if you shell out the $111,100 it costs to buy that lens, your not gonna be worrying about carying it around
