Would you take a paycut from another job to work a dream job?

As some of you may know, I work for a higher end german car dealership where the money is fairly good. Some of the faster techs make 110k a year but the average is roughly 60-70k a year at my dealership. I am at a point in my life now where i need to make a choice if i should try to reach a goal of mine that has been in place for roughly 10 years to become a Ferrari tech. The downside of this goal is that i will have to leave my city to a larger market and step into a car brand that is known for shit labour times ( how mechanics get paid) and incredible high standards of workmanship. I have dealt with ferrari briefly with past experience but only for minor things such as services and helping another tech remove an exhaust system. I am used to dealing with mid/rear engine cars so that wont be a huge shock to me but i feel as if almost every other aspect of the job will be a major change in lifestyle and payscale. Another upside with working for the Ferrari dealership I am thinking of is that they have a raceteam that I may be able to sneak in with and travel the country with them in their racing series.

I currently have around 10k worth of tools, and if i make the jump to ferrari will most likely end up having to spend another 10k in tools as well. I have contacted the service manager of the dealership I am thinking of working for in order to get this all in motion but i can back out at any time.

What would newschoolers do?

Honestly, pay cut for a job you enjoy/aspire to do is way better than a job thats meh to you. Your job is your everyday life, its better to enjoy it vs just making more money.

It's your dream go for it! Sounds clique, but do whatever will make you happy. You seem to have the experience and qualifications to go far so go for it.

Does this mean they replied? Have you spoken to your girlfriend about it?

girlfriend has not been notified of options yet. I had a job interview offer from this dealership a few years back actually, but declined due to not being ready yet to make the leap. I may or may not have to leave the girlfriend behind, depends on how she feels. I know she hates the city this dealership is based out of so im not sure on whats going to happen there.

absolutely, provided that the pay cut still allows me to live happily outside of work and do the things that i want to do

well are you going to be happy with the job your at in 15 years? is the money at that point going to be worth possibly being miserable where your at. where as if you do go for this now and you do succeed, you sound like you'll be way more happy with that.

from how you typed that out it sounds like you would be super stoked on working with ferrari and making connections and gettin on that race team sounds like an incredible experience. your way farther in life than myself, so i dont know how i would make the decision in your situation. but id say go for it man. you only have one life to make yourself happy

i know im nitpicking. but why do people struggle so much with this word?

cliche. you meant cliche.

clique is groups. like high school cliques.

ok done grammar correcting.

My only advice is be cautious of sacrificing happiness away from work thinking that work will make you happy.

You say you might leave the GF behind. How happy does she make you?

How is it going to be, working for this dealership? Is the GM a douche? Is your boss going to be a douche? What about the owners? I can think of quite a few people who own ferraris who I would NOT want to deal with.

How are you going to like living in this new city? I left a 92K starting job because I hated the town where I would have to live/work. Haven't regretted it for a second. Neither have the other 3 guys who left at around the same time.

Not saying don't do it. If the job will make you happier, the working environment will make you happier, and the away from work situation will make you happier, why not?

Just make sure that you factor more than just working on sweet cars all day into the equation. Work's less than 1/3 of your life by the numbers.

Well i'm 15 so don't take my advice that seriously but id go for it i mean you don't wana wake up and say shit every day of your life

agreed. there's a minimum amount you need to be earning so that you can still pay bills and have a decent standard of living, but as long as the cut is still above that number i'd do it in a second

I agree with this, as long as outside of work you will be happy. if your pay is enough to live comfortably, then I would say go for it and enjoy it. that being said, if outside of work you will not be happy I think it would be better to stay.

haha, seriously, thank you. i saw that and was about to jump into my grammar police uniform. good thing i read the rest of the thread first.

if its a job you don't like you work 5 days and enjoy yourself for 2 days.

if its a job you love you enjoy yourself for 7 days of the week.

This. I mean obviously your incone is still very important, but as he said if you can still live comfortably and have the money to do things that you want to do I think that it is definitely worth leaving a job for something that you really want to do.

thanks to all replies. The pay cut would be down to what i figure to be about 70k from possible 100-110k. The city the dealership is in is a nice city which would be nice as I hate my current city. The biggest dream for me is to get into their race teams for ALMS and such, but who knows whats going to happen. Thanks all for the support. +k to all.

There is one huge question that still lies in my mind. If you take the pay cut and move will you be able to work back up to the same pay you have now in the next couple years? If so for sure do it no questions.

that. if you get a pay cut that makes outside of job life harder, but job life better, then you've just switched things up and accomplished nothing.
