Worth it to switch to mips

when i bought all my gear about a year ago i looked into everything except for the helmet. i kinda just chose one i thought looked good and ended up getting a mod5, but i didn’t pay any attention to mips. now that i’m consistently skiing blacks and double blacks a lot of the time, im wondering if it’s a good idea to get a mips helmet. the giro ledge seems great and $90 is relatively cheap compared to a lot of the other helmets i’ve seen.

just thought i’d ask around for opinions cause it’s one of those things where i’ve got a functional helmet and there doesn’t seem to really be a “good time” per se to actually switch, unless i take a gnarly fall or crash and crack my helmet, but who knows how good or bad that might turn out

Hit my head the other day pretty hard and am happy that i haven’t felt anything change from it. No idea how much mips makes a difference but from all the slams i’ve taken in my giro ledge and the reasonable price i’d always say it’s worth it

If it's on your mind it might be worth switching to know you're doing the most to protect your brain.

I took a really sudden/random fall last week and hit my head really hard. It was not on dangerous terrain. I ended up with a super mild concussion. I was wearing mips. Maybe it helped maybe not but I'm searching for a new helmet right now and it's going to be mips or wavecel so I know I'm doing the best for my head.

If it's worth your peace of mind then it's worth it. Nobody can tell you the exact threshold of when a non mips helmet wouldn't save you where a mips helmet would. It's probably pretty small considering plastic helmets slide on snow pretty well and all mips is is a sliding interface between your dome and helmet

I have a mips ledge and i love it and also remember that a huge portion of people here also love the ledge

yeah i saw somebody recommend it on a thread a couple days ago

No reason not to get mips really. It’s like 20 bucks more, possibly could save your brain from a bad slam (more than a non-mips helmet would). I have a mod 1 with mips and it’s pretty great. I’ve heard the ledge mips is great too for 40 bucks cheaper

mips isn’t really going to be the deciding factor between a brain injury or not. Mips is a great feature to have but more in a moto helmet or something like that, as for as skiing goes, it isn’t a dire need.
