Big Bear sucks but Mt. Baldy does not. Neither does Mt. Waterman. Neither does Mammoth.
If you have the ability to get a ski lease at Mammoth, and the motivation to go a lot, Socal does not suck. It blows doors on living back east. I ski Mammoth usually 3 weekends a month, and Baldy every weekend I don't go to Mammoth. The last few years Baldy has gotten great snow. Last year I got in 43 days, with 30 of those at Mammoth. I know lots of other people in Socal who do what I do. Mammoth passes are only around 650$ if you are an MVP member.
You can get great skiing in socal, you just have to be willing to drive(and pay) for it. If you can't afford a Mammoth ski lease, that makes it a bit tougher. That being said, I know some guys from Hermosa who drive to Mammoth 3 weekends a month. They leave Saturday morning at 4 am, get a room at Motel 6 for one night, split 3 ways, and get in a lot of days that way. I'm glad I can afford a ski lease, it makes things much easier.
If you are willing to make the effort, you can have a great ski life and live in socal. Norcal is a bit easier, as Tahoe is closer, but Mammoth is one of the best mountains in the country. Socal is great, you just need to stay away from Big Bear/Mountain High/Scummit. If Baldy and Waterman have good years, you can ski quality terrain without going to Mammoth.
