Working at Whistler Terrain Park

Hey I was wondering if anyone is here who worked at the Whistler Terrain Park last year or the years before. I tried to figure something out with the online application on their homepage but couldn't find something specific.

Whoever worked there, could you give me some insights and some application help? I am very interested in that job, cause i just finished my Bachelors in Architecture and I am trying to merge my architecture experiences with my passion. I'll appreciate any help.

Thanks, Lukas

there are no job postings for it yet so you wont be able to do anything online. best bet is probably to ring the cabin and speak to the guys there, they should hopefully be able to give you some information

I know Frodo (actually I think his member name is jason... now) is on Whistler's park crew. Or at least was. You can try messaging him, but he's not on NS as much as he used to be.

From what I've heard, the whistler park is fueled by volunteers. Meaning if you have no experience and you don't know anyone on the crew you might have a hard time. your degree might be useful though.

I'd suggest getting another job on the mountain and spending some free time helping them out when they need it and befriend them. that should line you up for next season.

but whistler probably has a lot of park staff and the turnover rate is pretty high so come January there will likely be space that needs filling.

also I don't wanna be buzz killington here but you're a little late, whistler has been hiring since may before they even closed for the season and most park crews will be hired in the spring/early summer

I'd also add to this that typically park crews rarely hire outside candidates. From my experience these things are 100% about connections to the inside. I mean for sure give it a shot, but have a backup plan. I only got onto my first park crew by getting to know everyone and begging for a few years straight - helping out wherever I could.

Volunteering is a huge in on these things. If you're a rockstar volunteer they love to hire those people because a lot of people that want on park crew absolutely suck at the job.

Persistance is key.

OP, whistler will not even consider hiring you unless you are legally able to work in Canada (which means having a work permit/residency/citizenship)

not sure if this applies to you or not

Most jobs are just starting to go up the last month. Keep checking back regularly on their website. Also obviously if you talk to anyone on here on the crew there they can let you know if there are spots.

Some places don't even post park jobs online ever. Some people do once in a while. There are always people trying to get on park crew. Friends of park crew, other departments at the mountain. Sometimes when jobs open up they're already filled by those people. Also sometimes almost the whole park crew will come back. Some years everyone leaves or get's the boot. It can be pretty random.

As somebody else said, if you can't get in for this year maybe take another job at the mountain. Show your face in the park, meet the crew, let them know you're interested without being too much of an annoying nag. Maybe theyll have a spot for you next year. Maybe somebody will get hurt or fired and they'll need help mid season.

Also sometimes need help for events, or days when people don't show up. Offer to help if there's ever anything they need. If you do decent work, aren't an idiot, you have a shot.

Good luck.

been working whis/blackcomb (mainly blackcomb) for the past 3 seasons. job postings dont usually show up until november. just keep checking the jobs section of the WB website. One of the requirements for the job is to have worked in parks for at least one season. if you have zero park experience, even with your architecture degree, you will likely not get hired on to paid staff your first season. you could still apply for a volley position though and see if you really enjoy the job or not. if you're a good volunteer theres a much better chance of being hired the following season.

this is all very wrong. we have 1 volunteer per mountain per day. the rest is paid. thats usually 3-6 on the whistler side and 4-7 on the blackcomb side. when i got hired at WB the job posting didn't go up until November. theres maybe up to 4 new people a season, both mountains combined, so i wouldn't say thats very high turnover rate. people in parks tend to like their jobs a lot.

any other questions just message me. like paige up there said i am very rarely on ns these days so i probably won't get back to you for a while.

yeah I've never worked at or applied to whistler this is just general stuff I learned from applying to park crews in the mountains. park crews in general have a high turnover and hire early within a circle of people they know. But I did hear from people that worked there and people on this site that there are a lot of park crew volunteers at whistler.

what jason said is spot on…you gotta put your dues in at WB to get the jobs you want.

Thanks guys! Any recommendations for a cool job that includes a lift-pass?

If you work rentals for wb you will get a ton of hill time. The shops are open until 9 or 10 so you can often work evenings. Every one thinks you won't ski much if you work in a shop but the times when the Hollis open is when the shop is quiet as everyone is skiing. It's the evenings which are busy.
