Working at PCMR

just got a job as a ski instructor at PCMR, was wondering how the work place was, how the area is etcc... I've never been out west to ski only in Vermont really; so im hoping this will be different...

And know of any good places to rent an apartment or something thats close to PCMR?

well its more corporate than some places, i have had some friends work there and they said it was alright considering its a mountain job but they said they would not want to work there again. i guess they are just uptight about what you are wearing and how much ridinig time you get which sucks.

PCMR is the least corporate of the Park City area resorts, but still corporate to an extent. I kinda feel like that's overblown though considering every worker I talk to at every mtn in Utah (except for Brighton and Alta) all complain that their mtn is corporate. PC is an awesome place to be in the winter- the nightlife is sick, you get to meet people and make friends really easily, and on your off days you can pop over to 'Bird/Alta/etc for some bigger terrain.

Working at PCMR, if its the same as Deer Valley (where I worked last winter), means you'll get to ski PCMR, DV, Canyons for free, Brighton for free Mon-Thurs, and steep discounts ($30 or so) at Bird and Alta, then half off Jackson and Sun Valley if you wanna road trip. For those kinda ski benefits I was more than willing to deal with some of the corporate mentality.

in all seriousness, switch to another pc resort. i highly highly recommend working at dv or the canyons. pc is just like a crappy mix of the two. its neither chill nor brings in the big money.

canyons is by far the most chill mountain employer in pc and IMO has had the most hunnies working there the past 2 years. keep in mind they still have a ton of rules compared to your average job.

dv treats their employess really really good if you understand that you have to follow the rules. as a ski instructor you will be compensated very well. you won't be working with a ton of cool young people but it didnt matter to me. teaching kids to ski is the same whereever, might as well get bigger tips and be treated better over at dv. get a pass somewhere else though, dv is boring as hell to ski and and sucks on powder days now. bonus dv has employee housing. its not great but it does exist. also if you do a season at dv you can pretty much work at any other ski resort.

This sums it up pretty well. DV does have employee housing (proud alumnus of Prospector Palace), and they take care of their own better than most. You'll deal with some snobby/annoying clientele, but it's worth the hassle.

deer valley already denied me.....but the canyons has offered me a job as well. So im still on the fence, also Breckenridge may hire me....they will get back to me soon on that. also no big deal with being corporate and all as ive dealt with all that crap before and doubt it can be any worse than some of the theme parks in Orlando that ive worked at.

Generally what i hear out of the instructors is mostly complaints. But who knows! You're gonna be working with Never evers and youngins for your first year, so if you're good with kids then it won't be bad at all.

And whoever said PC was too corporate, its not really a bad thing. I mean no long hair and a tucked in shirt is all you have to worry about for appearance. And since we are under the POWDR Corp, we get to shred POWDR corp mountains free, as well as DV and Canyons.

But you shoulda been a liftie instead.

I applied to be a lifftie but never heard back, but whats to complain about really? i get paid to teach little kids how to ski and get paid ok plus tip, so no big deal right? unless there's something im missing.

Only that you're working while the mountain is open...shit's weak!

Have fun skiing half of the days you could by working a night job, and don't give me some crap about skiing everyday and enjoying your time with kids.....wait for a pow pow day

i dunno. after the second or so week of lapping first time i could see that getting a little repetitive. and doing it hungover would be somethin else. hey man there are tons of people who love it too! mainly just the girls and snowboarders whine.
