Working at A-Basin

Planning on working in CO next season as a lift operator, have the opportunity to work at A-Basin. Anyone ever work here? Also does anyone know how the park is?

A bay is not a mountain one goes to to ski park my dude. They typically set up a small but fun hike park setup at mid mountain.

Early season park is fuego always, and then the park basically just turns into something you hit on your way to the bottom/going to another lift.

Now that I think about it, even though the park isn't great the location is sick. You can do a bunch of sick skiing on your way to the park and on the way down from the park. Never thought about the fact that their park is right out in the middle of the mountain basically, and every other resort puts there park somewhere relatively isolated.

Bump lifts at keystone if you wanna ski park. You get maybe one 20 footer and a small handful of boxes/tubes/rails at the basin. As previously stated, you don't go to A basin for the park.

A basin is probably one of the most fun mountains in Colorado imo there are a ton of other great parks in the area if you want to ski park, but the park at a basin is like 3 rails, a tube, and two jumps. Not saying its impossible to have fun on, but there aren't very many features. The terrain there is unlike almost anything else in the country though, so I'd go for it.

Don’t work for a resort. Plenty of other jobs in summit county that pay way better and don’t get your ski pass tied up with your job.

Why is that? I’ll be moving from Michigan so employee housing in a furnished apartment is huge bonus. Plus the ski pass. What other jobs though I’m interested to see other options

IDK coming from Michigan, the barriers to entry for the resort gig are so low that it does make sense to take advantage of it, just to get you out there.

Once there, you'll learn of tons of jobs that also offer pass and other perks that aren't as corporately strenuous, and keep you there year-round..... Or you'll go home.

Good luck basin is sick

Having your ski pass and housing tied to your job can be a dangerous thing. Lose your job and lose everything. Summit is a job rich area. Tiny workforce and lots of jobs. Housing is definitely the hardest thing. But if you can find that I would never suggest working for any of the resorts

Had a friend move out from Minnesota to work at A Basin but it burnt him out on skiing. When you conflate your job and your fun you start to forget that it's fun. Not everyone's like this but when my friend had days off the last thing he wanted to do was drive up to his workplace even to ski for fun, he just wanted to take a break from being up there. Josh is probably right, you'll be happier working away from your fun place and saving your free time to be up skiing. Also most A Basin jobs are during the daytime, but I know a lot of kids in Summit who work evenings and nights and can pick any day of the week to ski.

Like said above op it can be a problem having your job tied to your pass and housing.

But as a fellow Midwesterner to Colorado, its really only a problem if your a shitty worker or have problems managing money.

I spent 6 winters in a row while working a mountain job and using the employee housing. Never once had a problem other than getting yelled at by ski patrol. Keep in mind I was living a frugal life cause all I wanted to do was ski. Cheap beer with mac & cheese. Especially my first couple winters. I was making shit pay compared to friends working in hotels, restaurants and bars. But I skied more than 50% of those service workers cause they were hungover or to tired from working til 3am. It's all about what you want to do.

Also keep in mind the days are gone where you could just call in sick and ski your mountain. With electronic passes your bosses know when your skipping work and skiing. I was always shocked by the number of stupid people think they can get away with this.

If your looking to ski a lot at a lifty job get on a 4-3 schedule if they allow it or work somewhere that has a night skiing shift. Otherwise get your job and housing lined up out of the resorts and buy a pass.

I would also say go farther than A-basin. Nothing wrong A-basin but there's lots of cool ski resorts with housing that are bigger and have better parks if that's what your looking for. Telluride, Copper, Aspen Snowmass ( I spent 8 winters here), Breck, and Crest Butte. Normally hiring for these jobs won't be til June- August. So don't sweat if you don't any offers til summer.

If you have the ability to head out to CO this summer and work anywhere a bit and you could probably find a affordable housing situation in Summit county. Plus you could just camp around on FS land til you landed at a spot.

Also this summer consider working as a bartender, server, hotel concierge or similar to where you live. Build up some experience and somewhere out west would pick you up fast. There is always high demand of service workers out west.
