they just stole the idea from Takeshi's Castle (MXC)...

Wipe Out is much less amusing than MXC... dubbed over japanese people doing incredibly dangerous things with crappy plastic helmets is hillarious. fat american people doing perfectly safe things and having stupid commentary = not funny.
