Winter Park Open

In its second year, the Winter Park Freeskiing Open was born because of the lack of AM/PRO Freeskiing slopestyle opportunities and events for athletes last winter. The goal was to have a unique format event, provide the finalist with exposure via a live webcast, and put some money in the pockets of the best freeskiing athletes in the region. We wanted to level the playing field and give sponsored and un-sponsored athletes the same chance to enter and compete for all the finalist spots. No favorites played at this event, so if you want to break onto the scene amongst the best – you can do it here. MARCH 13-14, 2010 http://www.rlyrd.com/freeski_open.html

I wouldnt go to this again... The judges were snowboarders and didn't know what was going on.... Giray got shafted in finals

ha welcome to the world of freeride skiing, its a judging sport not every one is gonna agree. and every comp is like that. if you dont like it join ski racing.

I totally agree that competitive freeride skiing is up to the judges and rightly so, but it seems wierd that the judges would be snowboarders. I'm sure they are sick riders, but skiing and snowboarding definitely have their own styles/tricks and you would think that it should be judged by others who are part of the sport. I guess sometimes this is close to impossible, plus I bet all the local pro/am skiers wanted to compete not judge!

hmm i forgot the finals was a big air...i hope that isn't true for this year!

but anyways the top 2 seemed to be rather on point to me..

If I'm paying $100 to enter a contest that (for this year) is one of the largest open ski contests available, There better be SKIERS as judges. Congrats if the right kid won, but that doesn't take away from the fact that people who didn't deserve to be finalists made it... and kids who fell placed higher than kids who didn't fall.

I wasn't there, but from what i've heard it was pretty poor.... so my statement is just based on the idea.

Big ski contest - get ski judges.

and slopestyle event - make slopestyle finals. Big air is a thing of the past.

Oh no doubt, D Spong was the clear victor...Clearly some of the judging was proper, but the majority of it wasn't. I saw the scoreboard and noticed several riders who fell their second run and still scored higher than the first...

If you're hosting a comp at 100$ per entry, the judging should be up-to-snuff and definitely not carried out by snowboarders.

I not usually one to talk bad about the industry, I just think this competition needs improvement.

haha, and good job officially welcoming steve to the sport of freeride skiing and explaining how it works.

i've seen several contests where the top 10 finalists without a doubt deserved to be there. older VT Opens were pretty solid in my opinion. I think Rainville won with all four 5's one year. That's fucking ill. no dub fronts there.

yeah, be it the first year there was sure to be some problems, i wouldnt be surprised if they got legitimate skiing judges if they do it this year.
