Should be installing on the first computers in a couple hours. Thoughts? Glad they are bringing back start menu as to not screw over non-touchscreen users anymore. Will the new Edge browser be significantly faster than Explorer?

Curious to hear how it is, i have a new laptop coming this week and plan to load 10 over the preloaded 8 os

seems like its everything windows 8 shoulda been, no real reason to stay on win 7 if they're giving it away for free IMO. I've been wanting to bootcamp my mac for a while now for gaming so it looks like nows the time

i'm gonna wait for a little while before upgrading, just to make sure everything has time to release compatibility updates if needed

its only free until they figure out all the kinks, it will be going to a subscription base in the future.

Yeah I Had heard about the subscription part not about the free part though

They said that there is not going to be a subscription. What they *did* say is that it will be service-based (which I guess might be confusing). Basically that just means that there won't be service packs every year or so, they will just be rolling smaller updates out on a much more frequent basis. For example if they want to update one of the core apps, they will now just push an update rather than waiting for some arbitrary milestone to release a service pack.

Itll be free for the first year if you have Windows 7 or 8(.1), you should be able to just go into windows update and it will ask if you want to upgrade. It only takes 30-60 minutes depending on your internet speed, much smoother than previous updates (I usually recommended doing clean installs).

I've been using the insider preivew for the last few months, it's very stable at this point and it's pretty nice overall. I have to use a mac for work but have windows on my gaming PC. It's basically the same as 8, just with a normal start menu. And all the "modern" apps can run in a window now instead of taking up the whole screen. Pretty nice improvement for the 99.99% of people who don't use their computer as a tablet.

Something to take a look at with regards to a new security glitch built in as a security feature. It shares your Wi-Fi password with everyone on your contact list automatically in skype, and outlook.

check out the link here: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news/windows-10-automatically-grants-home-wi-fi-network-access-to-your-outlook-and-skype-contacts-072915.html

I may not have explained that right so look at the link. I think there's a way you can turn it off too. I'll probably be checking out windows 10 tonight.

if you want a start menu on windows 8 just go here: https://ninite.com/

and download "classic start" under utilities

probably a stupid question, but did i miss windows 9 or something? lol. also probably gonna get it.

I might be wrong, but I think they decided to not do windows 9 because it would be too easily confused with windows 98 and 95 when doing searches for it or something to that nature.

I think they just wanted to get as far away from 8 as possible, so they made that shit up to be like TEN! Double Digits!

Source? I heard its pretty much free forever.

I meant the initial upgrade. So once you update to windows 10, you don't have to pay for the updates. But say you hold off on updating to windows 10 until 1 year after then you will have to pay to update your device.

Oh gotcha. I thought you meant we would have to pay for additional upgrades after a year.

whats the difference between using this and waiting for the little icon to tell you to upgrade?

If you use the link, you can have it now. The little icon waitlist thing was supposed to reduce 1st day download demand.

It's free for one year from its release date. Then it will have to be paid for to update.

Do you really need to update it though?

Just curious. Windows 8 is the suck.

But Im not going to pay for shit so don't want to upgrade if it's not worth it

He means update as in to from 7 or 8 to 10.

My brothers been running win10, switched back to 8.1 because it was annoying him so much.

- can't postpone system updates more than 4 hours, even if you do postpone them it restarts your computer anyway

- updates downloaded and installed automatically through p2p, opens security holes. P2p is only trustworthy if you can checksum verify the download before you open it, you can't do this here.

- everything you do gets sent to Microsoft, like typing data, search history, apps you use etc etc.

- yet to find a way to fully disable fast boot. Basically when you turn win10 off it hibernates rather than powers off, which means it stores some of the existing system state in RAM. Faster boots, but much harder to get into bios and if you boot into another OS all that data in RAM gets lost.

these are the things that stand out to me but there are more. he thinks it corrupted half his hard drive, but I feel that that was probably his fault.

im sticking with 8.1, I only use windows for occasional gaming (linux master race) and the start menu never bothered me anyway. I never really got all the shit it gets, some bits are annoying but it's stable and doesn't spy on you...
