Winch build idea

Been looking around for a winch but since they cost about a billion dollars I was looking at building one. Then an idea occurred to me. I have a small ATV that I don't ride anymore because moved and don't have much property anymore. So I thought about just using that as my winch. I want to know if it's possible to replace one of the rear wheel with some type of spool. I would then mount it so that neither the spool or other other rear wheel were in contact with the snow. So NS I ask will this work?

Sounds like it would be easier to just pull people in with a rope attached to the atv instead

traction would be really shitty trying to hit urban on ice and snow covered concrete

do you want the winch to be portable or is it going to be in one spot... even a small atv seems too heavy to be portable. Also the gearbox is going to mean that you have to shift as you are pulling the person making it take longer to reach top speed. sell the atv and use the money to buy parts to build one

It won't be moved too much. Most of the spots ive scouted have been within a reasonable distance for two or three people to move it. It's surprisingly easy to move and i also still have the front wheels. It's automatic so i wouldn't have to worry about shifting it myself. This would also only be used for spots which i need a lot of speed as I already have a bungee for normal rails and small hits

I used an old pit bike and took the rear tire off and tied rope to the air hole in the rim and its been working great.

how many cc was it

50cc and it gets going plenty fast. The fastest we have need was around 20 but that wasn't full throttle. so i'm sure you would be fine with less than that.

You could try to make some sort spool that attaches to the tire so that way you don't need to remove the tire and you can still drive the ATV to your urban spots.
