i have 1999 Subaru legacy outback wagon that will prolly have 170,000-180,000 miles on it by the time spring break rolls around. and me and three of my friends are making the trek from PA to park city Utah. its also manual. think she'll be able to handle it?

 
Its a Subie. I'd send it.

Get an oil change, New Air filter, Tires rotated, and anything you might be worried about at that point looked at at that time, but I bet you'll be set.

My 97 Subaru did PA/CO numerous times, at least 6 of those times (round trip) when it was over 175k miles. I just recently did CO/CA round trip with it 230K+. After my return to CO though, I finally retired it at 243k somethin.
 
make sure every time you stop check your oil. Subies don't hold much for oil. Had a subie with 350k+ miles (original engine and transmission) and that was a daily check for me. If your going across country you definitely don't want to run out of oil and blow up your engine somewhere in the middle of Iowa.
 
I did CO to CA in May, and CA to CO in August. 187,000 miles on my 98 outback. Check your oil every time you stop for gas, and you'll be golden. Should take about a quart every thousand. Get an oil change before you leave, make sure your coolant hoses are all tight, and you'll be set.

This car is freaking dope. You'll have fun.
 
have you replaced the headgaskets? it's a 99 which means you've got the 2.5 w/ the DOHC... prone to blowing headgaskets especially at high mileage. I just blew out mine on my 2.2 with 285k on it and sadly it's more money to replace them than the car's worth.
 
Do this. I did not. I am the proud owner of a new used engine and substantially more poor than I was before. Other than that hell yeah your car can make it, I've got a 1999 legacy wagon with almost 200,000 clicks on it and as long as I put oil in it it runs awesome. Love it as a ski car cause it's wicked in snow and I don't give a shit about the inside so I literally throw my shit into it.
 
yeah buddy! keep an eye on her as you make the drive, take it easy. its only about 2k miles, really not that much.
 
giver! tomorrow wil be my fourth 8 hour drive in my 98 forester 185xxx in the last month and shes damnn finne!
 
A good word of caution though. Same thing happened to him on basically the same route(NY to UT), with a similar Subaru, about 6 years ago. You can end up with no car, 200 dollars from the junkyard in the middle of nowhere and a bus ticket
 
you will be fine as long as regular maitenece has been done, and you dont drive like an idiot and ride the shit outa the clutch. 180k nothing for a manual wagon.
 
Will story is correct.

My car blew a head gasket in Laramie Wyoming and it was the worst trip of my life. Haha along with Erik Olsens and Shane McFalls.
 
Middle of Iowa would be the best place if you happen to die in Iowa.... West edge/Nebraska would be a buzzkill and a half.
 
you'll be fine. I drove out from Eastern PA to Utah a couple months ago with my 2001 volvo v70 (station wagon) which had 130,000 miles on it. 12 hours of driving each day and going 90mph for a long distance in nebraska caused the engine to overheat. Still made it to Utah though and it still runs fine.
 
Yea definitely check the oil alot and check the water in the radiator. My 98 Subaru used to have transmission and radiator issues but as long as you kept adding water and oil it never overheated and it ran fine. Good luck!
