Will I die?

MY Boyfriend and I are going on an almost 2 week road trip to colorado and utah. We plan on mainly camping, and by camping I mean back country camping. I have little experience with colorado, none with utah, and worse no backcountry camping experience. The closer the trip gets the more scared I am that I will be eaten by a bear, or a mountain lion, or both. Anyone care to share any good advice? Or am I just doomed? more info we plan on hiking Mt. Elbert, Cathedral lake, and most of the ntl parks in utah (arches, canyonlands, bryce, and zion). HELP ME!!!!

I mean, it seems silly to go on a 2 week trip with no experience. Does your boyfriend have experience?

but yes you will eventually die like everyone else.

Take the steps necessary to avoid getting eaten by wild animals. Plan accordingly and be smart. Do your research on what to do and more importantly what NOT to do.

If you do that im sure you wont die..

Be safe and smart and have a good time!

Don't keep food in your tent. Hang it from a tree far enough away from your sight.

That said you probably won't even encounter anything crazy in a short trip. It would be vary unlikely to run into a mountain lion.

You'll be fine. Honestly the drive there is massively more risky than your camping experience. Bring a few beers or some liquor and have a bit around a campfire the first night. A good fire is always nice for keeping the animals, or the boogeyman away. Drink a bit, get relaxed and go to sleep.

Are people killed by big animals? Of course, but it's very unlikely. You probably have a better chance falling out of your car, choking on your dinner, etc.

Good luck and have fun. Camping in the outdoors is awesome. You'll love it.

I dunno about you guys but I'm fuckin' jealous, have fun! Hopefully your boyfriend has done this before or you both have some homework to do.

Elbert is one of the easiest 14ers to hike. Just start early because we get lightning/thunder storms almost every day in the summer and you DO NOT want to get stuck in one at the top of a 14er.

Cathedral lake is fucking beautiful. You will love it.

As far as bears, hang your food up high in a tree at night.

I live in the Aspen area, so I know the areas you're talking about fairly well. Feel free to PM me if you need any local advice.

Fuck lions and bears, Rancors are the biggest problem in the Colorado backcountry

Idk. I'd have to say when I was in the Utah bc camping, it was the ewoks that you had to worry about

Purchase some bear mace. Don't go off and get lost or do anything stupid either. Your own actions will get you killed before a bear does. Hang your food in a tree way from your tent too.

I'm sure you'll be fine.

Most importantly, have fun! Don't let all the worrying get to you because that just ruins the trip.

if you're gonna be in the national parks down in southern utah the chances of you running into a bear are slim to none. they live in forests.

Bears and mountain lions are highly unlikely. We don't have grizzlies in utah anyway and the little black bears are pretty much harmless, they run away if you yell at them (and they're also not a concern in southern utah). Mountain lions are extremely rare and don't like hanging out around people. You are way more likely to run into rattlesnakes and tarantulas. And even if you got a rattlesnake bite you'd still be fine assuming you went to a hospital, so there's nothing to worry about.

don't listen to any of these hooligans, you probably WILL die. your best bet is to stay at home away from the bears and not worry about being eaten.

still saying fuck bears, Rancors will eat you before bears do

Mt. Elbert is really fun. make sure to start early or lightning will keep you from summiting. As long as you keep food and things the bear might like up in a tree the chances of a bear or mountain lion encounter are extremely rare. camping is really fun but make sure you bring everything you need.

Camped for three weeks with the boy up in Oregon.

Makes sure you have a tarp.

They're "backcountry" camping, which probably means backpacking. Do not bring a tarp backpacking. Definitely bring a tarp car-camping.

you're more likely to run into a wampa in hibernation than a rancor. really those forrest's are huge places and and you could come across anything.

What you're going to want to do is keep all of your food in your tent - this will protect your food from being eaten by wild animals. If you come in contact with a bear or mountain lion make loud noises and quick movements - this will scare it away. If you run out of water any tree or plant with a white sap will quench your thirst like no other. Remember to buy your hiking boots at least one size smaller as they will stretch A LOT - there's nothing worse than hiking boots that are too big. Also, remember to listen to everyone on NS as everyone on this site skis therefore are survival experts.

Above all remember that your going for a whole two weeks, which is almost enough time to starve to death - you should probably bring some crackers just in case.

Half of this sounds like good advice and half of it sounds like bad advice.

My semen contains a magic elixir that will allow you to achieve immortality Op. It must be sucked out in order to work however. I'll even eat some pineapples beforehand.
