Why should skiing be considered an extreme sport? Research paper.

Okay so I am doing a research paper for English class and I decided to do it on Why skiing should be/is considered an extreme sport. We have to take a stance and present facts and sources to back up our stance. The stance I am taking is that Skiing should be considered an extreme sport but I need some help on where to start looking for things to prove that it is an extreme sport that arn't completely opinion based.

I am going to compare it to other extreme sports in terms of risk and skill to do certain aspects of the sport.

So what I am asking is if you guys could give me your opinions on why skiing should be considered an extreme sport and also to help me find some less opinion bases material to base some of my points off of.

All help would be greatly appreciated since I have to write 5 pages by Friday.

Thanks! and if you have any questions just post them in here or send me a PM or something

1) I love how we all do each other's homework.

2) I just scanned this http://www.nytimes.com/1987/03/01/sports/outdoors-common-thread-seen-in-ski-related-deaths.html

and 3) make sure you are specific (if that's what you're going for) on what kind of skiing is extreme. Obviously Natasha Richardson's death during a ski trip was a surprise, but does the risk she took make her time skiing "extreme"? Are Saturday family trips to the hill extreme because they're skiing, or are Chad's Gap-esque, or big mountain situations the only instances of EXTREEEEMEEEE SKIIINGGGGGG.

good luck. I'm writing a paper on "The Literacy of Skiing", and I'm trying to not bash my head in as it's gorgeous outside, Cinco de Mayo.. blah blahh and now I'm on NS distracting myself. Cool.

The only other topic I could even have a chance of writing a half way decent paper about is Pink Floyd and the movie The Wall and about LSD or something but our teacher is a chill guy and he will understand just as long as I use correct MLA format and don't get below a 70 I don't care.

But I am probably going to focus the paper more on the Big Mountain aspect of skiing such as trips to AK and giant lines and huge cliffs since that IMO is the most extreme aspect.

you want extreme?look at shane mcconkey and what he was doing that unfortunately got him killedif that's not extreme, i don't know what is
R.I.P shane

Just write your name on the top of the paper and just say "skiing is an extreme sport" thats all you need.... a solid 50 right there

Yah I will include ski base jumping since that stuff is insane and combines two extreme sports and will defiantly make a mention of Shane in my paper.

dudeeee why are you limited to this topic? im not feelin it.

maybe do one on why pipe skiing should be in the olympics. would be less of a generalization to make. skiing in general doesnt have to be 'extreme'. you've seen the bunny hills before right lol. go with something that has a legit point to prove and facts to back it up that arent so abstract.

you need to watch 1999.

there is an entire segment in there about mcconkey and other pioneering exstream skiing in the us.

they talk about the roots of the sport in stream skiing, with footage of them skiing streams near squaw.

then, they talk about what made them give up the waterways to become ex-stream skiers.

pretty heady stuff...

We have to relate something we learned in class to a paper. I am fucked I am just going to write some bullshit paper and hope I get a 70.

that whole movie is hilarious, from the fake radio audio to start it to the snowblade commercial halfway through.

i actually watched it last night. i love scott gaffney's movies.
