Why I Essentially Quit Skiing

Negativity.

All I see on here is angsty teens riled up on senses of entitlement telling each other how wrong they are and how your worth is lowered due to being wrong. One could argue that NS is no indicator of an entire sport, but fuck, if this supposedly the hub of the skiing community, I don't see how it couldn't be.

I used to love contributing to the sport in any way I could (s/o anyone that remembers The Facebook Interviews), but I no longer see the point in this wasteland of professional gymnasts and bitchy forum aficionados. Skiing used to be fun, but it's ran its course and mostly due to hopelessness.

Anyway, fuck all of you. I'm out.

No matter where you are or what sport you love, 12 year olds plus internet never equals good. If you really don't like it, forget ns and go shred with your buddies. Its hard to blame a website for why you dislike such an awesome sport.

Just start heartcarving.

How you would do that right now remains a mystery as the skis can't be bought. But you can hire some WC slalom skis for a day and drop the poles and focus on your heart and breath (whenever you remember.)

This way you can avoid park tools, get a new sensation, and avoid an injury..

there is a HUGE difference between the political agenda of "newschooler.com" and 12 year olds acting 12, although it is SAME SAME!!!!.... the ski industry has always held back true freestyle, and its full circle to trained aerials with grabs and non style technical combos, it used to be twister twister spread, now its double switch up- 450....

never forget negative X negative = positive

Skiing is a sport, perspective is everything. If you think it sucks, it sucks. If you hate the skiing community; shut the fuck up and ski powder.

That would be a good reason to quit this forum or the internet as a whole. But it's a terrible reason to quit skiing. Less internet, more skiing!

Yeah this is a pretty negative thread in itself. Newschoolers is just the Facebook of free skiing. Everyone acts different behind their internet persona. If you were on hill and saw this trend I might be ok with this, but really, quitting skiing because of an online forum? That seems drastic

OP, FYI "this" is not skiing. Skiing happens when you have skis on your feet, and snow under the skis- believe it or not you can't do NS and skiing at the same time.

I suggest giving up the part that bothers you and putting more thought and effort into the part that is awesome. You know- rub some gnar on it and see how you feel.

Well fuck you too. But in all seriousness it would be freaking retarded to quit a sport just because there are a lot of dumbasses on a website about it. Unless of course you didn't actually like the sport in the first place, then by all means please rid us of your pressence.

*quits skiing because of website he isnt obligated to visit*

haha but for real though, if you dont like NS dont visit NS. Why the fuck should it have any effect on your actual life and actual skiing. The slopes arent filled with "angsty teens" and "bitchy forum aficionados" the slopes are filled with guys and gals who just wanna shred and hang out. But whatever, if youre quitting skiing its your own loss haha, more pow for the rest of us

Believe me - I hate negativity more than anyone else on the planet. I also believe in people having a voice. Its hard to give the people a voice without having a little bit of negativity creep in.

The biggest thing we can all do instead of making angry rage quit threads that spread more negativity is be the change. Your article series was sweet - that kind of stuff being the content that is pushed is what will make an enormous amount of difference in the long game. People can be convinced to be awesome, and we're doing our best to toss out those couple of shitheads that fuck it up for everyone else.

If you need a break, you need a break. I often take breaks from sites when I get overloaded on something. Facebook during anything political drives me fucking bananas, and I rage quit on a daily basis.

When you're ready to come back, join the revolution of making skiing better.

And I agree with others - just go skiing with your friends. Makes a world of difference.

you kind of have to take NS with a grain of salt. There are annoying bitchy 12 year olds you kinda just have to ignore but there are also alot of cool normal people to talk to, ive actually made a few good friends through NS. Hell, I even met one of my housemates for next year in regionals by meeting up to shred and then we ended up being super chill.

besides that, why quit skiing if you hate NS? Just quit NS? Just go out and shred with your buddies and dont worry about anything else man. Why let other people take away from what you love doing?

Baby come back, you can blame it all on me...

you let the views and opinions of people on the internet dictate what you do for fun. youre a huge tool and part of the problem you brought up.

When I write a lot, it's often worth reading. So op, do yourself a favour and read this.

Hey op. Welcome to the internet, where people will say hurtful things, troll and post negative things for the sake of it because they are all safe and frustrated behind their screen.

So yeah, the world is full of dumbasses, but the reason you notice them so much at times is because they are much easier to notice than anyone else. But I don't believe a bunch of insecure hateful losers can have much impact, if any, provided that you stop giving a dam about them.

So let's do this again. Welcome to NS, probably the greatest sport dedicated community website the internet has ever seen. Where one can learn so much about his sport to the point of realising they didn't know anything before making an account. Where incredible content is posted every day, where you can be inspired by an incredible amount of photography, videos, articles, reviews, discussions, that will show you new ways of doing things, new styles, and so much more. Where you can even have access to pro's opinions. All that at your fingertips. I'm amazed everyday to see how much you can look at and learn on NS. Maybe the love for our passion and lifestyle isn't exactly explicit here: You go to ski gabber, and you'll find a lot of trash comments, of uncalled hate. But as I said, you're only smarter than idiots by being able to ignore them. Implicitly, this website is a gold mine of love and stoke for the passion that unites us. Wether it be touring, shooting, urban, powder expeditions, mountaineering, park laps or photography, NS has it all, a hub to every aspect of freeskiing, along with a few incredible laughs form amazing threads, and trust me those are not even that hard to find. So stay with us, but just change the way you use NS. Like every gold mine, there's bound to be a bunch of shit around it, you just got to swipe that away. Only stop for what's good, and ignore all the little negative aspects.

If I get you, and I hope I'm wrong, you quit freeskiing literally. If you feel you have to stop doing what gets you stoked, what you love and aspire to do as much as possible because some pissed you off with hatred and negativity, then my friend you must be stupid too. Get back out there, and ski, not only for yourself, but for your friends (and common, not everyone at a mountain can be a dick rolling in the park telling people they suck and that they're not doing it right). So get your twin tips, fat or thin, and go skiing for fuck's sake, because if you let a bunch of idiots do what they think is right and do nothing about it, we're all fucked. I mean look at the middle-east...and btw, ns trolls are still not comparable to isis...comon, it's not even that bad.

BOOM. Couldn't have said it better myself.

You did like 3 incredibly boring and unoriginal interviews....via facebook. You're not exactly walter kronkite. And, if you allow an internet forum to taint what was ostensibly your life's greatest passion...well, you're a fucking idiot.

I love when people think they're some legend and that people actually give a shit about whether they log in or not. Get over yourself.

Because quitting NS is a great reason to quit skiing. Just leave the site, don't leave the sport.

This guy knows what's up. And as previously stated, this is the internet, not skiing. Even on the slopes there will always be people who criticize your style, who laugh when you eat shit or who are just downright arrogant but don't let it get to you. Look at Nick Goepper, FAR from being my favourite skier but you have to respect that despite lots of negative vibes from parts of the skiing community towards him the guy just keeps on slaying and racking up the accolades. Just say screw the negativity and don't let that shit ruin skiing for you because no matter what you do, haters gonna hate.

You just aren't looking in the right places. Look at all the people just out there doing it in real life and posting edits on NS. What about those people? NS is a lot more than a forum. Go look on the front page and see all the awesome content. Ignore the bullshit. Everyone was young and new on the internet at one point.

can u backflip ? i guess - no

do u got a dress-length tall tee ? i guess - no

are u spancered ? i guess - no

do u got streed cred on ns because of all that ? i guess - no. here's my answer.

Why the fuck would you quit skiing because you don't like the stuff that goes on, on newschoolers.

Challenge accepted.

Oh and op, a friend of mine quit skiing cause me and all my friends "talked to much about skiing". I guess it turned him off since thats all we think about in the winter. Anyway like a week after we quit skiing we post a little vid on instagram and then he realizes how much he misses it. You can do without the NS, but you'll miss skiing so much dude, i guarantee it.

yea theres always gonna be negativity. If you don't like the way the community is going why does it matter, just ski. If you're going to quit just because of some kids bitching online that's pretty dumb.

1. My interviews were cool as fuck.

2. You clearly remember them.

3. You are epitomizing the OP.

Why you think I leave this site for months at a time? Really all you gotta do is be smart about the threads you click on and take breaks. It ain't too hard

THAT is the only post you reply to in this whole thread???? People have been writing some thoughtful, positive, and encouraging posts to you. And you only choose the one you want to argue with? Seems like your sources of negativity are more internal than external. Maybe you are right. Maybe you should quit skiing so you can work on your own issues.

You care way to much what this site thinks of you. You made a thread entitled "am I a legend on this site". If anything this site is better off without you IMO. Here is a quote from you that epitomizes negativity

"I'm gonna keep this short and sweet, but the passion's gone. I no longer find myself sleepless the night before a day of skiing. I've been turned off by all the senseless bullshit in this sport. I don't care what you say, the olympics are fucking lame. And you know what's even lamer? People like Henrik who claim to be real core to the sport, but are in Sochi right now promoting everything people like me stand against. That's fucking lame. And that's just one example."

I will never understand people like you who can't accept that skiing is going in multiple directions. Face it you stopped skiing because it is not "core" or as underground as it once was. You never skiied because you loved it you skiied because you thought it made you cool.

Why would you quit skiing because of a website? That should have no influence on the sport itself bro. I mean occasionally you get the turd kids who take the website too serious, but deff keep skiing my friend, just delete your NS.

Reading some of these responses got me all stoked and inspired. Then I saw your response. If that's how you respond to criticism I think I see the problem right there. Also posting in here for threads.

I do certainly understand how hard it is to ignore the really harsh posts. It sucks having someone just get under your skin.

Dylan, be the change. Look at the positive responses and give those some attention.

Excuse my language but i hate hypocrites.

Let me try understand your thought process here.

First: You thought there was too much negativity on NS'ers so you decide you're quitting skiing all together?

Ok, just so you know NS'ers is not skiing. It's a community of some skiiers.

Second: You knowingly decided to create a thread about how much negativity you think there is on NS'ers thereby bringing more negativity to NS'ers, but who cares right? you don't use the site anymore so whatever right?

Sorry but your just a douchebag and you ARE the reason you claim to have quit skiing.

NS'ers fucking rocks!

Keep up the positivity and stoke people!

True, sorry, that's the last time I post on my phone, just after waking up. There is a lot of negativity and people can really get under your skin. Heck, I used to be scared to death of theAbortionator posting in my threads because I knew he was going to tear me a new one (that said now I know Rusty a little and he's super chill, haha)

Yeah, NS can be negative and can really suck but that is part of interacting with humans. As Doug said, be that change, be the kind of member you would want to interact with. Just skimming through your old threads it sure looks like to me that you have been straight up asking for a lot of hate. Your articles are great but claiming to have "straight up changed journalism" with them is a little sketchy, most Pulitzer Prize winners don't make claims like that

Don't beg for attention, that won't change anything and it won't make you permanently happy. Instead focus on the details and build up the community one post at a time. Building others up is the best way to make yourself feel permanently better about yourself.

NS is no indicator of an entire sport

One argues this point because its pretty much spot-on. Why are you treating this place like its the epicenter of all things skiing? Its not, its just a website dedicated to discussing skiing/other shit that also gets ads from companies.

I definitely wouldn't consider it "the hub". All the hubs and epicenters are the mtn. towns and ski areas that constantly help keep our sport alive I think, and and keep us doing what we wanna do, also the people that help keep our sport rad. Not crummy forums filled with entitled park rats all pent up with angst and frustration.

Why are you letting other people ruin something you enjoy? Sounds like a personal issue on your part, and not skiing being all "negative".

don't see what NS has to do with skiing...

If some kid talks shit about me on NS is that going to make the powder any less deep or hitting jumps any less fun?

I remember because you never let anyone forget them. You literally asked NS if you're a legend. Maybe I'm "negative" but I have more fun on the slopes in one day than you appear to have had in your morose little life.

This thread is a pathetic attention grab and I feel dumb for having even bumped it.
