Why, exactly, do we want skiing to grow?

Now i know this is a bitch timebomb waiting to go off, so don't get the impression that i don't want skiing to progress. I really want skiing to progress and better tricks to get thrown down and stuff, but i wouldn't say i want it to grow.

As much as having more people skiing would be awesome (more ski buddies, better equipment, cheaper equipment) i wouldn't say i want it. I'm afraid that if skiing grows to much, our ski hills will be ruined. All of our secret powder stashes will be tracked. All the snow will get scraped off the hill. The lineups will be to long. Obviously i want there to be more skiers, but i don't want bigger lineups or our hills wrecked.

Another thing is the poseur issue. I don't want skiing to turn out like snowboarding, where everyone has spent thousands on equipment and can hardly throw a 180 or make a good turn.

As much as i want skiing to progress, i'm afraid of it's growth since it will lead to bad things.

This does not apply to making people already on the hill (snowboarders) converting to skiing.

yeah i dont want skiing to get to the point were some kid has a 500$ pair of ski's and goes out skiing 5 times a year just because his friends are doing it.

I just said... so our ski hills don't get tracked, and so we don't have rampid poseurs running around. Also, skiing is still something unique. It's about keeping our hills good and keeping our sport at a high level.

We want skiing to grow, because we want more people recognized for the amazing shit that goes on. Honestly, I'm really down with how big it is right now, but I'm assuming the athletes trying to make money off of this sport think otherwise. It's pretty rare that a pro-skier makes enough money that they don't have to do anything else to support themselves, and thus less time is spent working exclusively for skiing, thus less time is spent working exclusively for skiers.

ski is already one of the fastest growing and biggest sports in the world. So when people talk about skiing growing they usually mean park skiing and big mountain skiing. Some ways itd be good for it to grow because there would be more money in it. but skiing is for fun and if it gets ever rated I think your right. I like it how it is now.

yea i liked it when u said u ski and people thought u meant cross country or like the old lady's skiing or even water skiing especially the look on people faces when u said u were going to "ride" this rail

i totally agree, it would be good for the cost aspect of it and ski buddies. But i mean, there are kids everywhere at my mountain and most of them are noobs. i dont want skiing to end up like punk, where most of the kids are poser noobs trying to look cool. I just want the sport to stay the way it is aside from the trick progression aspect of it

The one reason I ski is beacause there are few that do it, compared to boarding that is. I'd love for our sport to progress and grow, it will get big it's just when and how.

not that i want more people to ski because then wed have more gapers and such but i want more people to know about it so when i say i ski people dont automattically think i race or just cruise around

I'm fine with the way it is right now, but it'd be ok if skiing grew or became a little less popular as well. I'm not too worried about the main stream image of the sport as long as I get to go ski, that's all that's important to me.

Yeah but what if where you live is limiting your time skiing. Like im gonna get scratch's but i can only go like 10 tims cuz i live 5 hours from snow.

maybe it wouldnt be bad in montana but in new york lift lines can sometimes easily be 20-30 minutes, and id love to say im a skier and people not automatically envisioning me in a tight suit with long thin skis but there is such thing as too much

it is getting so crowded that you can't even throw down, I am just sick of getting run into, both in the park and on the slope.

I used to have ideal outlooks being the only one switch top to bottom etc, that is just not realistic nor do I care, just stop jumping the rollers/kickers in the park and landing on me while I'm hiking.

I would really like to thank all of you for posting intelligent posts. And everyone knows that i'm talking about free/big mountain skiing right?

How about we encourage every person who's only skiing to be cool to stop it immediatly? I really do long for the days when I was one of 4 skiers in the park, and when I saw someone on twins I immediatly thought they were good and I'd rubberneck just to watch them in the park... Hmm.. Something to think about.

to late is some cases but skiing used to be the thing in the 80 when everyone wanted to go and ride the old straight 200 k2 then it died out for a few years and its comming back now, unless its something like baseball or football or soccer that people are braught up playing all acrost the country/ world it will keep comming in waves

why exactly? let me elaborate. (fire under water already touched on one issue). Lets look at the popular sports right now. ie snowboarding and skateboarding. Profesionals get paid large sums of money to do what they love, there is more competitions with bigger prizes. corporations will listen to the sport because of the money involved, leading to better equipment. The more people doing it the more talent that will be unsurfaced, and finally, more respect. Now lets look at a small sport(newschool really isnt that small) Rollerblading. top rollerbladers dont make near enough money to pay for living expenses. Competitions are few and far between, companies cannot afford to do exactly what they want. There is no outside interest and the sport is ostracized becuase of it. now which would we rather be? hmm, tough choice. (nothing agaist rollerblading, i love it)

I've seen so many kids at my resort already doing that. Kids buy some chronics, scratches or something, then dont even hit up a small jump. I've tried to convince them but I dont think they're good enough at skiing in the first place.

I don't see a problem with kids with twins who don't ski park but still ski hard and well. All I want is a sick park and good fresh lines and uncrowded runs, but to have a sick park you have to have a lot of interest in it, and if that means noobies hanging in the park, then what can you do? At one local resort I remember even 2 seasons ago being one of the only kids tearing down the slopes going switch. I see more kids doing it now which is cool, but I just miss flying switch and not having to worry about running into anybody.

i like skiing the way it is but i want it to change what ppl think when you say u ski...and i relized this year how much snowboarders dis skiers...is makes u mad cause i dont go around and say snowboarders are gay....ppl should just chill out and if skiing grows into snowboard were the kids buy 500 dollar boards thinking that they will come good then i dont want to sit around in the park waiting to hit a jump that most kids fall over when hitting

i think it would be nice to tell someone that you ski and them not think you just carve down the hill all day. unlike telling someone you snowboard and them thinking tricks right away. but still im starting to hate the cocky little fucks who have there k2's and do 360's all day

Not to wreck or jinx this post, but this is one of the most Intelligent response posts on NS. It was cool to read something not infested with "shut up" or "fuck you newb" 2 words posts.

' don't want skiing to turn out like snowboarding, where everyone has spent thousands on equipment and can hardly throw a 180 or make a good turn '

Too late. But what does it matter? They are out there having fun. It's actually they who fuel the industry.

More posers in the sport means more money in the sport. Meaning ski companies can spend more on R & D so you can have sicker skis. Resorts get more money, so they can open up more terrain. It's for sure a good thing.

too late bro. I sell those skis to that kid every day. And he loves them. Besides would you rather he skied 50 days and you had to stand behind him in a lift line or he skied weekdays and poached your lines? The average person who considers themself a "skier" or "snowboarder" rides 7 days a year and you can quote me on that one.

Skiing needs to grow because my ski resorts and ski companies are in the red, if these companies don't recieve the proper funds they will disappear.

I actually wish there were more people that would buy new skis every year and go skiing five times a year, that would be a win-win situation for you and me. More money to ski companies, but not more people the slopes.

BUT I do agree that crowded slopes suck and the rush on powder days can get a little much, but whatever, I still will be skiing regardless, guess I will eventually just have to find some small ma and pop ski area that is still undiscovered by the masses.

If it grows I highly doubt that it will get anymore crowded. It will just cut into the number of people snowboarding...gaping, and ass sitting all over the hill.

In the 70's and 80's skiing was huge! It dropped off in the 90's..and now is making a come back. Thank God!

I ride Skis.

I want skiing to grow because I'm sick and tired of being looked down upon. Even though I shouldn't worry about it, because I love the sport, I can't help but get pissed when people view us as "gay". Skiing in my area is like wearing a fag-badge around to anyone who isn't in the park. The boarders are cool with the skiers and vice-versa, but once you leave with your boys and go down to the lodge to pick up a few girls, they take one look at those boots with the lip on the front and they run over to some punk-ass boarders or something.

And as far as the amount of shitty skiers will increase if out sport grows, I agree. But hey, that makes me look all the better. parks might be a little crowded, but you just gotta push'm around a bit.

i actually enjoy suprising people still. i like explaining to people what i do because its like, other people arent doing it. its the new snowboarding, like it was 10 years ago.

we are talking about 2 different things, I could care less if someone is on twins and doesn't jump, who cares? If every single person young and old was on twins that doesn't matter.

I meant the park is dangerous at a basin and other places becuase people drop in from the top and fly through jumping ridges taking out hikers or causing avalanches etc. We need to make it safer so that those that are dedicated can stop looking over their shoulder for a gaper to plow into them at 30 mph.

You are right as well but that doesn't bother me nearly as much.

sorry to spam, but another thought - the clothes are funny - some last year but mostly this year, kids have 1000 dollar digi camo or whatever and others think they are a pro because of this. Really they can't even stand up on a pair, they are attracting attention and building unnecessary anxiety themselves, I feel bad for them. Then again they shouldn't give shit, good for them.

i just want freeskiing to get enough recognition so that I never hear this again: "You go in the park? but you have skis on, i thought only snowboarders were allowed in there..."

I don't get it. Just ski. The point of skiing is doing it, not worrying about whether you're "looked down on" or whether there are gapers everywhere. There already are gapers everywhere, plankers and skiers alike.

Just go out and kill it and fuck what anyone says. It's YOUR passion.

the funniest thing is, that if these "posers" on twin tips were on carving skis half of us would be bashing how "gay" that is. i like where this generatoin of skiing is going, and that means that people need to get into it. truly i think its awesome when i see some old guy on k2s or whatnot as opposed to some old windbag cursing out those "damn kids skiing on railings!" you will always be able to set yourself apart with ability, and this is something popularity cannot do anything but progress even further

Do it like the animals do. When we take their space they pack up and move further into the backcountry... doesn't sound all that bad to me. Bring on the expansion. Breed Love not hate

personally I like where skiing is at right now. There aren't THAT many freeskiers so we are still like a group on the mountain and for the most part we get along. When everyone and their uncle has a pair of twin tips it'd be boring and we wouldn't have that group atmosphere anymore. I'm sure many of us stuck with skiing for the reason that everyone snowboarded and we want to do something different. I don't want skiing to become mainstream

theres definitely some companies who i DONT want involved in the skiing industry, and i have a bad feeling they might get involved a few years down the road
