Why does black history month exist?

Serious question that was brought up in one of my history classes today...

why do we have a black history month? Why no white history month or anything to that nature?

Only answer the prof gave to that was that white history month would be racist. Double standards...

So what does NS think? Support black history month or not?

Personally it doesn't really bother me, more just something interesting to debate or think about.

It is there to remind us that we enslaved black people for awhile, that we shot the last black man who had a dream in the face, and that white people are inherently evil and racist apparently.

it's just another way to make a feeble attempt at helping to equal out the races in this country which will never happen. the goal is to raise awareness of a minority and to appreciate their history overcoming oppression, but the bottom line is that nobody gives a shit

all year is basically white history with different holidays and events from our past. black people get mlk day and like a few weeks later they get black history month

idk i'm not opposed to it and i don't think it hurts, but then again i don't have much hatred towards black people

Except it is black history month. Not black culture month. It is there to remind people of the fucked up shit that happened and make people feel guilty and take pity on them.

my 1 argument is against people claiming that white people have a bunch of their own holidays.

like what though?

Are whites the only ones with christmas, hanukkah, new years eve, the 4th of july, etc etc etc. All these are celebrated by almost everyone in one way or another, white or black. (this could also lead to a debate about kwanzaa but i'd like to stay away from that...)

Because black people have only done 1 month worth of memorable shit. That's why its white history is 11 months long.

JK

because blacks are an extremely important culture in our country, and the mistreatment of them is and was horrendous and continues to have consequences today. thats not up for debate. and dont give me this shit about "white history month," that's the other fucking 11 months of the year

i agree having a black history month is dumb as shit. just as dumb as affirmative action. trust me im not racist. both of these are politically driven PR moves and only remind the black man that not so long ago they were slaves. especially for affirmative action, it just "affirms" that some races are perceived to be better or worse than others and forces employers to hire minorities. again, im not racist.

thats very true but i sure hope youre not insinuating that this is a legitimate reason to not have black history month

thatd be a great idea if it actually happened. like someone said above history (especially in our country) is told from the perspective of a white male, and having a black history month is the farthest thing from "inequality" in favor of blacks

My college has "African American Studies" as a class here.

Blacks want to be considered equals no? Doesn't them having a month just for them about their history make them different/special? Exactly the opposite of what they want.

yeah the complete lack of information about us fucking native americans left and right in our history classes is unforgivable

I don't know any slaves? Black people alive didn't have to go through shit. That's like saying that Irish people need to "level the pain" of the potato famine.

Too much damage has been done to simply forget about it this fast. Not even a generation has passed since MLK and Malcom X

let me be a little less vague. you are wrong because you think the mistreatment of blacks ended when the slaves were freed

Uh, yeah they did, but they'd be 60+ years old. Gran' pappy still had to go through that shit in the south up until the seventies.

I think the point he was trying to make was that "black history month" was kinda made after the Civil Rights movement. A great majority of black people alive now were not involved in that when it happened.

east harlem is mainly puerto ricans, dominicans and mexicans. west harlem is were most of the blacks are. it is becoming much more gentrified in west harlem though.

Alright... let me do this.

I am half Japanese. You know the amount of shit my people and the Chinese had to go through between probably the 1850s and the Civil Rights movement? We were essentially slaves to the railroad companies and then at WWII we were thrown in concentration camps (no, they were not fucking internment camps you dipshit)... Is there an Asian History month? Fuck no. Know why? It's cause of MLK and MalcolmX that Black History Month even exists. If MLK didn't have his fucking brains splattered all over a balcony and instead had lived to die of old age do you think we would have a black history month? Fuck, if he were re-incarnated he would probably say that having a black history month is just as racist as the shit that the KKK does.

All you kids are tying to be all politically correct. I am positive there are still racists out there, even people in power. That said the more that you keep telling someone that they had a bad lot in life and they deserve something from everyone the more they are not going to do shit. If I had an excuse for everything it would be pretty easy to cop out. I went to school with a good number of black kids, I am talking straight up from the Ivory Coast black as night kids. And of course this is in Colorado but never once did they ever complain about racism or anything like that. They didn't grow up in the culture that black people are inherently disrespected and abused. And they were better for it and never once used their color as an excuse or to gain special privileges. (except dick size jokes)

I can see the perspective of someone coming from the South in the 60's, but there is really no need to pander to a certain race unless you are interested in perpetuating racism. A black person today literally has every opportunity and advantage of a person of a different race. Any short comings are their own failures or their income level, which is really the true class barrier. Its not a factor of ski color, the real problem in America is the exploitation of the poor.

please stop posting... your posts are always retarded.

Black history month is there to commemorate, remember, and respect the slaves that fueled the cotton industry and thus played a huge role in the creation a successful country, it is there because during this time, until recently, and still to this day in some areas, they were treated much, much less than human. It doesn't really have to do with making people feel "guilty" and "taking pity" like your ignorant red neck ass thinks, but simply has to do with respecting and remembering... I think it means a lot more to the largely marginalized black population than it does to the white people.

And who is being an ignorant retarded moron now?

Black people here are treated like kings compared to how many blacks are treated on the Horn of Africa or central Africa.

I told Tasche about this but I have a friend who is now living in Jamaica but grew up in Somalia. The stories he tells me of what happens in that country and others in that area of Africa by OTHER black people is close to 300times worse than anything that has happened to blacks here.

And aren't you from fucking Canada. Do they even have black history month?

shit... i guess I should stop tryin to blame everything on my purple skis then.

but seriously, legit post... you put a lot of those sensitive intangibles regarding race and racism into a rather coherent paragraph or two. +k

Black history month is for black people to feel special for a little while. During that time we whites exploit their proud-ness of this by selling them overpriced shit with black pride on it.

This makes us richer and them poorer, keeping the black man down while at the same time making them feel special

so let me get this straight... you guys actually think you have a legitimate problem with black history month and think its unfair (funny word choice) that we have it? is that really your point of view?

While i agree there is a ton of exploitation of the poor, im not sure i agree that blacks have every opportunity that other races do either.

yea that and affirmative action bro. Whitey is the minority now, so i expect some motherfucking affirmative action to benefit me rather then take money from my pocket and make my future kids have to work harder then other racial groups to get into school
