Why do people feel the need to do group yoga?

Probably motivation, same reason people do group car washes

If you need motivation to pursue spiritual practice you are probably NGMI

Western Yoga isn't really even a spiritual practice anyways, it's just something to do

dude so right OP, it's like those idiots don't even know there are better things to be doing, like making stupid forum posts that no one gives a shit about

I do yoga for physical flexibility. Not some spiritual woo.

Yoga actually improves flexibility, balance, strength, mindfulness, etc. It's not just standing around making weird poses anyone could do. Don't knock until you've tried it

I actually really like group classes because sometimes in my own practice I'm not sure if I'm doing it right or what a modification could be. I drop into a class now and again just to be around people and improve my skills.

It's helpful for motivation. When you have a bunch of other people around you doing the same thing, it makes it easier to power through the poses. Having a regular class schedule helps a lot too. Also, it's nice to be around other people when you are doing activities you enjoy. I don't like being alone all the time during my endeavors and journeys.

But yoga is spiritual practice

If you don't like being alone you are still clinging to emotion bro and thus suffering

Motivation and a better learning environment for making sure youre doing poses and stretches in a safe and effective way...

not to mention the social element... I feel like thats a massive motivator.

Like, I dont even do yoga much and certainly not consistently but from the few yoga classes I have done, I have met some really cool individuals with similar interests. I have made at least 2 or 3 reliable backcountry partners thanks to group yoga.

Also, no doubt, women in yoga pants... always a win.

Fun Fact: Your favorite skier probably does more yoga in a week than you will do all year.

Seriously, Matt Walker used to dip out of our group project work at CU to go to Yoga class all the time. It actually inspired me to get a yoga dvd and its night and day how much better it makes your skiing.
