Why cant the east coast just be icy again?

We use to be known for our ice, now were getting 2 inches of rain and the snowpack constantly dissapears during the middle of winter. I just want the ice back instead of all the rain and 50 degrees in winter

east coast pows days used to be fun ? one inch of snow! ❄ yippee! ??

now east coast pow days are sad ? one inch of rain.. ?? baka! ??

Maybe someone from the east will learn to ski pow.

post paid for by my park city comp kid fund. I got so laid

my home hill is on track to open in jan with this weather lmao. Shit has really gotten alot worse in the last 10 years. When I was young we were consistently skiing in early Dec here

yea it’s honestly depressing as fuck. was skiing spring conditions yesterday in mid december. now it’s gonna rain over the next couple of days and wash our base away

I feel for ya. I had to move out west to chase winter. Just could no longer stand Jan-March winters, falls and springs never want to end…

The piece of shit patrollers pulled me and 50 other peoples passes when a storm came in totally underreported end of November and they were too unprepared to drop ropes and put warning signs up.

Huge mistake to rent a place for a season and not just fly where the snow is with that $$$.

Skiing is going to end up like sailing or horse sports as history moves forward. Something that lots of people used to get to play around with, even if it really was always dominated by the wealthy. Lots of people used to ride horses, and if you lived by the water your only choices of travel was rowing or sailing. But climate change will destroy the practicality of skiing as a casual hobby just like motors replaced horses and sails. In 100 years it’ll just be for the super wealthy, or people who happen to be born in one of the few geographic areas where it can still exist as part of the culture. Only at the high points of the world. I’m still gonna enjoy it while it lasts.

i know it wasn’t as insane out east last year but you guys are still saying all this stuff right after one of the highest snowfall totals in decades last season.

we got 3 feet of snow on tuesday in the march snow storm. i skied friday of the same week and it wasn't even worth skipping school. the numbers don't mean much.

We’ve gone from the ice coast to the wet coast

In the past few seasons in Pennsylvania the amount of skiing I’ve had where it’s well over freezing and the snow is slushy is probably 90%. Crazy to think about. I always laugh when people call it the ice coast cause it don’t get cold enough for it to freeze to begin with ☠️☠️

highest snowfall doesnt matter, the whole base was wiped away 2 times last winter

This is just how December is now, seems to happen every year. We didn’t have a base until mid Jan last year, but then it stuck around until April.

ours in southern quebec (bromont and allat) completely melted in march

Or every city has their own Dubai-style urban slope in a tube. We still ski but it’s 100m run inside a refrigerator.

chances are if it's under 32 degrees I don't even want to go skiing because it's probably icy as shit. Doesn't stay cold long enough anymore to have good snow for more than day or two.

Exactly. As far as I understand the science, since the global temps are warming up we’re going to be getting record snowfall for a while since warmer air carries more moisture. But only until it gets too warm for it to precipitate as snow. This is why we now get 2 foot dumps a few times per season then all of that snow is pretty much gone in a few days except at the highest elevations. This is also why places like Buffalo that see lake effect snow got absolutely crushed last year, because the rising temps compounds with the lake effect to give them ridiculous, dangerous amounts of snow. I mean people couldn’t even leave their houses, emergency services were crippled type of snowfall.

For the time being this will be great for the higher elevations out West because it will mean record snowfall for years, (Mammoth, Alta last year) but as time goes on even they will be affected and their seasons will begin to shrink just like the East. However the West probably won’t see that happen for another 50+ years.

Call it the “Golden Age of climate change” if that makes you feel better.

The new norm in the east is the only base will be man made lol

woods and natural snow covered trails are always gonna be thin rip

Killington this year last day of November. Still really angry and feel violated but I had to keep my head down and get my pass back at the meeting in April I might go rip them a new one.

Shitbag rent a cop patrollers on snowboards were hitting it for a couple hours and the same little cunt took his snowmobile out to pull passes.

Beers pushing 20 bucks in the lodge. It might not be that good again all year you can’t torture people and drop the hammer like that with no warning when you’ve always been laid back.

The word on the street is they put up game cameras at popular intersections. They’re identifiying people by kits if they get caught on camera on a closed trail and pulling passes that way. It’s ridiculous. Gotta be careful, they caught one of my homies this way, stopped him in the lifeline.

What in the CCP is happening to skiing man

Yeah it’s disgusting. Not much you can do but just ski elsewhere.

For how good it was early this year the resorts are aggressively trying to shrink the season and don’t want to open until Mid December even Jay hasn’t ran their main quad until 2 days ago bc it’s on its “fall maintenance” and they’ve had full coverage for almost 4 weeks. If we get a massive storm in April none of these places will be open for it.

I saw that on IG, but couldn't tell if it was real or a meme?

This is actually a good point. We got 3ft in mid-march last year and most resorts closed within two weeks. I imagine there are two driving factors there. Firstly, operating costs soar each year as resorts battle rain events and persistently warm weather. Secondly, the conglomerates have zero incentive to keep the lifts spinning for obvious reasons.

On a side note, I'm actually considering saving the money I spend chasing snow all winter in the Northeast and doing 2-3 cheap trips out west. It's getting harder every year to have an enjoyable ski season, even I lived in Northern VT or Maine. There are maybe 5 good days of snow each season at any resort south of Killington. Forget it if you want to ski in MA, CT, or the Catskills anymore. Total fucking bummer and, let's face it, it ain't getting any better even if we address the climate situation.

Fuck this.

bmbw needs to release an opening day date. i bet that before vail they couldve had it open by now. i miss skiing there past midnight

not really, I gotta admit this year the weather just hasn't been adequate. But yes in many years past they have squandered lots of good early snowmaking time. Even snow trails hasn't managed to open yet, and their snowmaking system is much better

This will be the first year I've skied at bmbw in 4 years
