Why can't I throw a 180?

I've been trying to hit a 180 recently and everytime I go I only get about 100 degrees. A few times I have gotten it only to be followed by multiple fails, I don't have a video but I generally have a slow great run in, I think that I just don't always fully commit to turning my upperbody but does anyone have good tips? I feel like I'm in the air for plenty of time but how to I rotate stronger/faster?

do 180s standing still, then try like carving and facing back uphill, then go for a 180 in the air off a little rolling knuckle

throw shoulders and body will follow

thanks, I can do them flat and while rolling but off of jumps I can't really get them, I've been trying on bigger jumps should I try off smaller ones?

When you're spinning, the head leads and the body follows. look where you want to go and not down at your skis.

when should i start the rotation, at the pop?

180s are literally my favorite trick so hold my beer and let me explain.

Start by practicing some switch riding on the bunny hill just so you get the sense of control riding backwards

next take ur skis off and just do some 180's in your boots to get a feel, like the other dude said, it will help you visualize better too

Then, when ur on the lift, or just chilling, picture in your mind you doing a 180 and just play it over in your head like a little clip, this will help with commitment and fear mitigation

Find a small jump or a lip somewhere, probably hit it straight a couple time to get a feel of what kind of air time you have so you will know how fast to spin, so then roll off with a decent amount of speed but not too fast, turn your head and wind your body as you're going up the lip, then turn your body follow your head through the spin and keep your eyes around the horizon line, this will help when you learn 3's too so you dont get off axis.

hopefully that helps, you got this bro, definitely just keep in mind the commitment to it

pop then spin. you don't need to wind up or throw the spin for a 180 at all. pop, *lift up your feet*, then turn your shoulders and body as a whole while flexing your core. don't be afraid to land backwards, it's easier and more natural than you'd think, and it's a lot easier than landing sideways!

ye i've done shiftys off the lip of a rail and it never ends well

The biggest thing that helped me when I was learning was getting comfortable looking straight uphill while landing. If you're trying to spot your landing while doing a 180 for the first time, the chance of getting all the way around is kinda low (at least it was for me). I started spotting it more when I got more comfy with them, but as I was learning I had to just trust the landing and look uphill to get my body to commit to the rotation. Like other people have been saying, hips follow the shoulders, shoulders follow the head.

i never was good at 180s until i practiced skiing switch more, so i’d learn switch skiing well before doing tossing a 180

This is wisdom. The biggest fear people have skiing switch is not being able to revert back to normal and getting too much speed and crashing. Having the confidence to revert back at any speed will help you not get psyched out from landing backward and the speed that goes with that. Once you get comfortable skiing switch and taking off, switch 180s are a really fun and easy trick too. Its a nice trick because you take off switch which looks cool but you basically just come around and spot your landing the whole way.

make sure you aren't taking off backseat. Your shins should be touching the front of your boots, not leaning way forward but there should be a little pressure. It's not as critical for 180s, but it will help you BIG TIME with 360s. Every season I have to remind myself to do it
