Why are shells often more expensive than insulated

Been jacket shopping lately and it just seems like such a scam that shells are often more expensive than insulated jackets despite having the same waterproofness/breathability specs. This is the case with most brands (of jackets with similar specs, obv the top of the line shells aren’t comparable) It seems sketchy since you’re essentially getting half a jacket. How could they possibly cost more to make. I’m starting to think it’s just a pricing strategy and they’re scamming us.
 
Well usually an insulated jacket with the exact same specs as the equivalent shell will be more expensive but that is because most shells are more technical then insulated versions so if you find one the same they will be more. But shells usually feature the highest membranes etc which you pay for. But yeah compare a goretex pro shell to a goretex pro insulated and the insulated will be more. So if an insulated jacket is cheaper then a shell by the same company it probably won’t be as high spec.

I think it’s insane. It’s just a way to squeeze more money out of you. Expensive shell. Then ten expensive layers to keep you warm. Everyone dresses like it’s Antarctica at 30 degrees. I have flylow baker bibs and quantum jacket and layer. But I am thinking something like that black crows corpus insulated jacket is the ticket to cut on layers.
 
Depends on the material..

much of the time a tech shell is using a stronger lighter face fabric along with a triple layer gore membrane whereas any cheaper insulated piece might only be 2L and have a cheaper face fabric yet claim some ridiculous wp rating

the high end insulated pieces cost a fortune.
