Cant remember his name but that guy who made that thread about being the oldest at momentum maybe?
Rode the T-Bar with him this summer up whis, great guy. One of my favourite tbar conversations all summer.
But seriously, this thread is stupid.
I'll be 23 this year and I'm no where near going pro. Of course I didn't really start skiing until I got to college. But I still have fun and enjoy it. Hope I make you sad
The other day some guy, probably in his 40's or late 30's, came into the park decked out in arteryx, and was throwing down on the jumps. Color me impressed
The yellow guy in this video is who knows how old but i see him at keystone all the time Courtesy of Newschoolers.com/static/images/flash_video_placeholder.png
Thats funny because i turn 28 in Feb. I had 40 days last year, will get my 6th day tomorrow. I still lap the park when the trees are skied off, and i have a rail in my backyard.
I guess this makes sense depending on your definition of park rat. If you mean skiing park even if it's a pow day park rat, then yes good point, but even a pro and anyone at any age who does that makes me sad.
His name is Birrion and hes 25. A true ski bum legend, he literally skis every single day. We skiied with him before thanksgiving and he already had 50 days in. If you see him ask him how many days he has, hes also one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.
I'm 26 and I hope I'll be skiing park for as long as I can. Still progressed a lot last year and had a ton of fun, can't see why that would make anyone sad?
That guy in the yellow is Russ. He's the shit, I haven't gone a day of skiing without seeing him shredding it up. He's also a ski school instructor at keystone.
I knew a long time ago I'd be skiing however I wanted - wherever I wanted and whenever I wanted until I literally couldn't. I'm still not there and just turned 31 a few days ago.
I had a conversation w/ the aforementioned JP Auclair a couple years back about being 30+ and what kind of skiing we "older folk" are more limited to now. He told me not to let age be an excuse. After all, he's three years older than me.
Also, look up Jiblife and ask him what he thinks about this.
Hopefully you stop skiing park or whatever genre you stop because you HAVE to, not because you don't think it's cool. That should make you sad if you do.
Just wanted to post in this epic old guy thread. 31 and, up until this year, have been making sure to scare myself once in a while in the park. I have no steeze however and will never get it back.
someone bump this thread in 15 years and let's see who is still lovin and killin park. I might have u all beat so far... 32, and I lap park all day long.
Anybody remember Revolver? Well, know who had the best segments? JP Auclair and Julian Regnier (sp?). Saying old people don't belong in the park is stupid. As long as they want to ski park then it shouldn't matter age.
well yeah... to me the term "park rat" means one that skis the park, all the time. I mean, I'm 26 and still hit the park, learn new tricks, and compete in local comps, but I am by no means a park rat.
lol at people calling him russ. i miss seeing birrion around schweitzer; i was on the chair the other day and some random locals were talking about how they didnt know who he was but that they hadn't seen the "mysterious bearded park guy" shredding around anymore.
I don't really think of myself as a park rat now, but I will make some claims. The picture below is from the spring of 1994. My friend Nigel from Australia is grabbing mute, and I am grabbing not quite tail, but same idea. These were 3's made tougher because we were skiing on 205 CM Slaloms. Unless someone can prove otherwise, these were probably the first spinning grabs ever done on skis.
We were building steps downs like this for probably 5 years. My claims are that friends of mine and I were probably building the first park style step downs and doing the first ski grabs and definitely the first spinning grabs. If someone can show someone doing it before 1994, I would be stoked to see it. I am 44. I also landed a 9 by mistake on same 205 CM slaloms, non twin tips. I was trying for 10 but didn't have enough torque. I skied it out and I don't think that had ever been done before.
