well les grands montets partially opens on the 3rd, which is in the chamonix valley, but abit hit and miss regarding snow conditions at that time

I will be there for the second and third week of febuary on a international exchange!!!!!! so stoked!!!

looks like the thread for me.

Im In Cham 2nd jan untill feb 12th and I need some buds to shred pow and do touring first and second week of feb. lets chat if interested.

last year was horrible snow wise.....but if your going to chamonix dont go for the park......off piste skiing is sick there though....but i have buddies there so its always fun no matter.

Most meteo stations see no significant snowfall for the next 8 days, as there will be no major change of the large scale weather situation.

There will be snow in December, but it needs 1-2m of snow to get a decent base layer for the rest of the season. Otherwise, it will be over before it has even started.

I haven't ever seen such a horrible early winter for us. As I said - even if snow is coming in December, unless it's several meters, it will just be a short to mid term fun.

I kinda disagree, late November/early December is a bit late but quite a normal time for the snow to really start dumping, last year was just really early and then look what happened, no snow for like 40 days. Winter seems to just be a bit late this season and it's the same all over the southern alps. Looks like the snow might hit on the 2nd.

You can't compare the two. It's better to have an early dump, followed by a cold high pressure phase, which conserves the snow, than to have no snow to conserve to start with.

Again, the function of base layers of snow is often underrated. We need much snow within the next two to three weeks - otherwise even large dumps later in winter will - if followed by a few warm days, not endure/survive. This is, btw., the reason why many ski resorts are currently covering their slopes with machine snow, even if they don't want to open within the next week. They want to provide a base layer to stop the (still quite warm) ground from melting the real snow once it's coming.

Yeah I know what you mean but the temp is dropping rapidly at the moment, with such clear sky's the heat is quickly dissipating from the ground and has been quite frosty over the last few days, I do agree it does need to snow soon to build the base but I don't think we need to panic just yet!

Hmm, the clear skies of the last weeks were a sign for inversion - cold valleys, warm mountains. At the moment, temperatures are dropping everywhere, though, even on the mountains. Let's hope it's not too late. :)

Yeah for sure, at least the temp is dropping at the moment so when it does dump the snow will have good cold ground to bond to, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that one of the most important things for the base to build on? So even if it is late the base would be more stable than if it snowed earlier in the month, melted a bit with the warm weather then re froze when it snowed again.

Usually, yes. But it's hard to say whether the ground will be cold enough once snow starts to fall. This November has been the warmest in decades.

Anyway, let's hope for the best. Maybe we get an awesome late season as in 2009. I remember powder skiing in Laax in mid April down into the 3300ft valley. o_O
