hey yo I blew my knee first day of the season at Baker last Jan and had a quad stranded hamstring graft...and I'm mad sketched to ski again this season. To those who have been thru the same, can you give me some words of consolation pleeeeeeze?

I havent, but I am frickin curious to hear the details of the accident, how it happened, and he pain you were in. I want entertainment people. Now post away, and make it gory as well. Just make it up.

Dont waste that shit

my best friend tore his acl three years ago. He is a boarder, and he can only board for about 3, 4 hours before he has to stop because it his knee hurts. Just do what your doctor says man. Lift lots, run lots, and swim lots.

now the old man sits until the days when time stood still, the hours always seem to fade, but the memeories never will. All the love that you gave me, the dreams in the night. Now I just want to thank you, while the day's still light.

i blew mine out in march a week before my skier cross races. then i missed spring break and the rest of the year. I blew it out on the 8th and had surgery the 18th...that was good time from injury to surgery.

i blew out my left knee the 2nd day in, and i had surgery a mont later and still boarded for the last two weeks of the season

i ripped my acl...uh like in Jan of last year too and i got into surgery 2 weeks later and i was skiing on it within 3 weeks, i just took it easy (no pipe, park,or fresh pow) and i only went out for like 3-4 hours a day. i had to do all these strength building exercises 2 times a day. but mine sounds like nothing compared to yours man. just talk to your doctor.

one of my girls tore her acl and didnt get surgery for like a month and a half. not good stuff at all

i think everyone should post the stories on how it happened! that would be cool. mine went so forth... I rode backside of the mountain til about 2. we had 8 inches of fresh and by 2 it was so wet and melting i decided to leave the friends and ride the park. after i decided not to take a run with the friends again i went through the park. I hit the first rail maybe 15 feet long. then the jump 25' and overshot. but kept going. Then i over shot the third hit with a 360 safety by about 15 feet and landed on my tails. my right ski caught an edge and went right and my body kept spinning left. so the knee went both ways. Dr. says thats probably when i tore my mcl. then i stood up and put all my wiehgt on my right leg not thinking anything was wrong and since the mcl was ripped in half i bent overside ways and obliterated the acl. still didnt think it was bad i skied down the rest of the run thinking i will chill in the lodge. skied down super slow on left foot and put my right ski down and tried to turn 'pop' i fell and said shit. ski patrol came and got me and i tobogand the rest of the way down.

well i had surg in late Feb of this year, and 4 months after that my surgeon said that if I was Picaobo Street, he'd let me go back to skiing (it's fairly rare that a doc would allow skiing after only 4 mos). But i rehabbed HARD for those 4 months so i was def way strong... But for some reason I'm still nervous as hell to ski again this year...i guess cuz it tore so easily the first time.

As for how it happened: first day of the season for me at Baker. Those of you who live in the PacNW know how shitty our early season was last year, all the way thru Jan/Feb.

So anyway, i skinned up Table Mtn with my buddy and fog was totally dense, couldn't see more than like 10' in front of us... so we decided to bag the trip up and huck a big gap at lower elevation instead.

The snow conditions were super shady, like chunky crud...with drifts of super heavy pow...but also hard in spots at the same time. So we huck the gap a few times and the landing seemed okay (considering the conditions that day), so i threw a big ol supermang front, totally stomped it...but i had so much speed thru all the chunky crud riding out of it that i sat on my tails to dump speed... and i hit a poof of something soft/heavy and one ski headed east and the other headed west... and i felt my knee tear, similar sensation to when you tear a drumstick off of a thanksgiving turkey. Screamed in agony lying on the ground (didn't really hurt that bad, it was more just emotional pain knowing what i had done). Crazy tho, i didn't even really crash or anything, it just tore as my ski got yanked while i was riding out the runout.

So i hobbled to my feet, got my ski off...my buddy Drew helped me hobble over to a nearby cat track, and I coasted down to the car. It's been a long, hard road to recovery since... I DON'T WANT TO DO THAT AGAIN.

i didnt have a lot of pain either. it happened and i was in the middle of the run so i slid to the side. I kinda knew something was wrong but not as bad as i thought. It just felt like my knee was kinda a warm mush. like i got punched super hard in the knee nothing to scream about but just to know it wasnt normal.

My story goes like this.. Thanksgiving day 2002 my 5th day of the season out at copper. i was actually Training Slalom i was soo tired from the night before. So i started the course shitty run, then i got on my tails in a turn so my legs were goin a totally different direction than the rest of my body..so i continued to fall backwards...then POP, and i was down ski patrol cam, and then i had a nice 10 minute head first toboggan ride, not to mention that a snowboarder cut off the ski patroller that was carting me. then they put me in a truck and i went to the 'mountain clinic' and the doc told me that the season basically done for you.. as for pain, it wasnt horrible, my acl was completely gone so i was able to walk as soon as they told me to leave, and i had my surgery about a month later.. it hurt more after the surgery. and then about 6 months of PT.. that was FUN..(sarcasm)

Here's my story:

Starting in late September- early october up in january 24th when I flew to Breck for X quals, i skied EVERY FUCKIN DAY. whether it was urban, back country, tables, WHATEVER, i skied everyday. because i crashed the previous year at x quals, i knew that i had to get my consistency up. i was super super focused on styling everything out, and getting all my tricks down to a habit. my friend timboskier and i made the trip to breck taht january with our dads. the first day we were there, we woke up at about 730 and were on the hill by 815, anxiously waiting for the course to open so we could get some practice in. and about 845- 900 the course opened, and we started warming up. it was still icy out and we were the ONLY ones out there except for a couple diggers and some patrol and what not. the course went like this: a couple rails, 55 ft tabel, 65 foot money booter, and like a 50ft-ish step up. on my second run through, after straight airing all the tables my first time around, i went unnatural 360 off the first table, landed WAAAY down the tranny with tons of speed, and not thinking, pointed it to the money booter. not knowing i was going way to fast,i steezed out a 360. after spinning my rotation, i saw the landing go past me, and i was still way up there. i floated another 40ft or so, rotating another 90 degress, and crushed into the icy flats just before the last step up. i started screaming, not because of pain, but because i knew that all the hard work i had put in that season went down the tiolet. that crash has put me out for last season, this season, and possibly every season for the rest of my life.

hows that for a story?

a couple people on here said they had surgery and were skiing within '2 months', '3 weeks', etc. Are u typing that in right? I couldn't walk for like 4 weeks after surg w/out mad pain...and virtually everything i've read about ACL reconstructions has said nobody in their right mind returns to skiing, etc for at least 4-6 months. what gives?

my friend tore his acl playing lacrosse, everything was going fine until it got infected and they had to drain it like 4 times. his whole highschool career is over. at least he doesnt ski

you had a quad hamstring graft? I had a double hamstring graft... is the same thing or are you left with only one hamstring tendon? (I think there's 5) and oh yeah, I'm looking forward to skiing next season, my dr. says I'll be ready

just don t blow your pcl...it is the one crucial ligament that holds your leg together...it attaches your quad under your kneecap to you tib fib...basically all your landing gear depends on it...gorrilla steez did it landing

work to ski...but only if you ski to work. The simple equation to skibumming 101

I've had two ACL Recons on my right knee, next time it goes, they take the whole thing out...its no biggie, I dont let it bother me too much, but recovery times a bitch

zachd:

That fuckin sucks bro...I can't believe all that happened from that one crash. Are you close to 100 % or what?

SomeSkiGirl:

If you had surgery w/in the past couple of years you probably had quad stranded too. They use two tendons...gracillis and semitendinosis, take two strands of each and weave them all together into 4 strands. Cool cuz it's way stronger than your orig ACL once it revascularizes and all that goodness.

Se7en:

You had two on the same knee?? That really sux... what type of reconstruction (graft) was each one? Did you blow it the second time trying to pin it too soon? Or just dumb luck?

i'm not sure how i blew mine, i think it didn't go all at once. it started after landing really flat and was done the next day doing some moguls after a long day. anyways i skied on it 2 seasons without knowing it was blown (i thought it was a sprain and i was just out of shape). i had my surgery (hamstring graft reconstruction) in june and was skiing in november. i took it easy (well easier) that season, and last season i took it hard and now i have pins in my foot but the knee is solid.

this isn't acl but a few weeks ago i hurt my thumb on the warm ups to the NZ freesking nationals, a dude took me out, keep my thumb in my pole, my thum,b kept going back, and back and back untill the bone dilodged from the rest of the bone rotated and i had to get rods put in my thumb, hurt like hell! 4 doctors thought it was skier thumb, but it was the worst the anesthitist has ever seen! ikm still skiing in a water proof cast!

so long as you work hard to get the muscle/strength back in the knee you will be fine. a lot of days you may feel a little bit of pain after riding hard for awhile. but it will go away. if it swells after a day of skiing then put ice on 20 minutes off 20 minutes on 20 minutes and you'll be fine. stay away from bumps too. don't be scared though, you should be fine so long as you put in the effort needed to build the strength back up and keep it. don't forget to wear your brace either

SLTskier: there are so many girls in freeskiing now have you noticed that

stowek2: yep..theres a few skilled ones...a good number who love it and want to progress, then a bunch of morons that are trying to impress the boys by wearing as little clothing as possible and as much make-up as possible on the hill

SLTskier: yeah however im one that trys to progress and impress the boys :-)

yeah i tore mine in a pipe comp 2 years ago. i kept skiing on it with a couple bandanas wrapped around it to try to hold it together, but i just kept falling on every hit. so 2 vicodins later i was on my crutches hobbling around, and went to the dr. who said my acl was torn and i got surgery 3 weeks later with a patellar graph. dr. said that during the scope my acl was completely torn and my meniscis had been torn for over a year. i was running a month later and skied 2 1/2 months later, but it was really hard without a brace. i got my $1300 brace in december and am working to ski without it now, and gain confidence back.

Shit, that was not the post I wanted to make.

What I was trying to say is you can come back and hard, I've torn up both my knees, I tore the ACL, MCL and 1/2 the PCL in my left leg. I tore the ACL and MCL in my right leg. I've used a patella graft for my left leg and a hamstring graft for my right leg.

All I can say is any variation of the surgery sucks and I hope you don't have to have it, that said, strech a ton. That's the best thing you can do. Work hard and don't go big for a while. I had my surgery a couple of years ago and have skied well over 200 days since so have faith and continue to work at your phys. therapy it never ends. For me preparing for the ski season is a year round deal, I strech a lot, lift a little, and run a ton. Just stay active, stay positive, and work hard to stay flexible...good luck.

you gonna go all out...or play it by ear? i had my surgery march 18th.

for right now, play it by ear... cause honestly, I don't know how it's gonna feel at all... after the first day I could tell you a lot more... but if it feels good, I'll definitely try and push myself

i tore mine january 14th, surgery in beginning of feb, and skied whistler camp of champs in june, i took a rail to the knee there and dislocated it, they said my patella was too weak so it just let my kneecap slide off to the side of my leg, but i could ski the next week, i could do everything except big impacts without it hurting too bad, and it swelled up if i rode hard, but it is solid now

1. doctors LIE

2. get yourself to a good Physical therapist (preferably a hot one, they touch you and you see them a lot)

3. pretend youre not hurt

4. wear a mofo of a knee brace

5. i ran out of ideas

but yea, ive had the fuckin worst knee problems...my advice to put heat on it, cause ice just takes away inflammation...heat brings blood to the knee, which is the natural healer for injuries...thats it...good luck man...any other questions, message me

i tore my acl completely and damaged my mcl in 02. landed back on a 7 and my knee dislocated inward. it didn't hurt too bad and i tried to stand up but it just popped out again. did it end of april, had surgery week later, skied weakly at hood in early july. very weakly. couldn't do anything. i could do all the stuff i used to do by the first day of the next season, end of october, but i didn't feel full until december. but now after ive had to lift weights it feels stronger than ever.
