i just got started with 3ds max like 4 months ago, i'm not very good at it yet. who is good at this kind of stuff and what program do you guys use?

I work as an animator using maya. Its certainly somthing which takes time, but its so creative you can do anything.

Training is essential though, Digital tutors are great and pretty cheap. £ds max has loads of tarining you just need to make sure you get decent training, (not just youtube videos). Take some time and learn and soon you will start creating some good stuff.

yah we did some work with maya in my class im taking in school, it definitively is something that takes skill and practice

Once you understand how things in the program work its not to hard to start creating some cool things. Im mainly a charcter animator, so I mainly rig and animate but I also have to do most of teh modelling, lighting and rigging too.

Your best bet is to work through some video tutorial courses. Start with the beginer general ones, then move onto the areas your interested in.

This is my current reel if your interested, to see what you might be doing after a couple of years.

thats some sick work! i got a really good laugh out of some of them haha, how hard was it to do the guy with the gopro on the bike. probably what i will do is just watch videos on how to do stuff and just work my way up and get better and better and more familiar with the program, im not really looking to go into a career with it i just think it would be way fun to be good at 3d animating and stuff like that.

Modeling the gopro guy was pretty easy. Just model a go pro and a stickman. The rig was fairly simple as the head did not have to have any animation. Getting him to ride the bike was a little harder. I also have a skier version and a snowboarder.

Once you know how to rig a basic biped character (stands on 2 legs) its easy to adapt to your own characters. The animation is just a case of watching reference videos (youtube is good for this) and adapting the movements for your own animation.

What I find the most fun, is working on a scene from start to finish, like the last shot, or the shot from the La Nina episode. Both those I did everything on and I had total control over the look from start to finish. Admittedly there also the most work.
