i lowkey want to see somebody try to new wave in a slope competition on some vishnus and in track pants. I wonder how the judges would react.

Four years ago the thought was: Well, Wally is out, guess Henrik is going to win it.

Four years later: Wally is still out. Guess Henrik is going to win it.

But this time I'm a lot more confident that that will be true.

Love Henrik, but also want to see Gus win something because of his story and maybe Alex Hall too. But there's a lot of guys that I think should take something home

I would love to see gus win. He has gone through alot and his win would be very meanignful for the LGBTQ community. He will laso be super motvated to win as well and has a solid bag of tricks that could easliy get him the win

what the fuck are you talking about? Gus has not done a single thing for the LGBTQ community? Also, what has he gone thru? He grew up rich, he has never had to work a real job, he comes from a good home and his parents are both married, he gets paid for doing nothing. Did i miss anything?

Are we all forgetting the fact that Gus placed in the last Olympics??? For Podium I want to see Henrik Harlaut, Jossi Wells, and some new wave rider that isn't Alex Hall because I feel like Alex has a lot more to conquer in his career and him winning a gold medal would make him too mainstream lol

Let's leave your personal problems out of newschoolers

Tom Wallisch

Yes I know, I know. But don't crush my dreams. Let me pretend, imagine if you will.

I'll thrown in $5 towards his plane ticket in hopes to see him do a practice run through. Or just poach the even and send the fattest 0 spin off the money booter.

whilst I do agree it would be meaningful and perhaps be great motivation for the LGBTQ community, the fact that he's gay should not be considered at all in the judging.

Being gay should not mean be advantageous or disadvantageous, the comp should be judged alone on the tricks.

tldr personal background is irrelevant

The story he told in the video before Slopestyle at Breck Dewtour

Did I miss anything? Yes, you did. 1. He got a human rights rights award last year for raising awareness for the LGBTQ community, 2. He watched his best friend die in front of him when he was 14. They were sitting on the back of a snowcat and his friends coat got caught in the tracks and he was dragged down and run over. He has been skiing for him since, his name was Hoot Brown. 3, He went pro at 16, 4. His parents divorced when he was 5, 6 His job is your dream job, he gets paid to ski...

I don't think he was suggesting it should in any way impact his score. It would be cool to see gus do well in some big comps though. Personal background is irrelevant in terms of judging but it's a big part of why people root for people. Something that makes them feel they relate to the person etc.

Personally I'm always rooting for him. He has some great results and is always a top contender, but I wouldn't mind seeing him win some more stuff. I liked watching him ski before, but since he came out I'm rooting for him even more.

Considering there wasn't really shit for gay action sports role models growing up, it's pretty cool. If there was somebody at his level then, killing it, I think it would have made it a lot easier for me to accept myself. As society is changing I think it will keep getting easier, people will be more supportive, and more people will come out. Until at some point, nobody fucking cares.

I get that he'll be being pushed as the gay athlete, backstories drumming up support for him. The dew tour was pushing it a bit as well. I know some people were getting annoyed by it and I get that. A lot of people care about backstories though. My mom is always telling me where people went to school, how many kids they have, what their home country was like etc. Especially in an Olympic year people love that stuff. I get that some people just want to watch the damn comp though. I wouldn't mind having some more gay people strap on skis or a board or even just watch the events though. The more the merrier imo.

This.

I really hope Team NZ doesn’t bring Jossi to Korea, the guy doesn’t want itbad enough and he is a complete waste. His whole “zero spin” act isn’t amusing, and is super ignorant. So I really hope NZ doesn’t waste resources on Jossi as he is a complete waste of money, and he doesn’t deserve to be there.

I enjoy up voting troll comments

Honestly I really hope that Nick Goepper doesn’t win I really fucking hate him. But if I were to chose someone to win it would have to be Gus Kenworthy

Not saying that gus should win because hes gay im just sayin I would love to see him win because I enjoy watching his skiing and I think he could put a great run down and furthermore I am aware that his background has nothing to do with his score. The point of mentioning that he was gay was because I feel that a win for him would be extemely meaningful (he would be the first openly gay athelte to win a medal at the olympics) and that is something I would want to see. So before all of you guys get so hostile maybe think and try and understand the point I was trying to make.

What you shove up your ass (or don’t) should have no bearing on whether or not you should win a medal.

Also, there are a lot of openly gay olympians. Gus may have wanted to be the first, but he is more like the 20th. He should really look into things a bit b4 sewing off bullshit. The first openly gay Olympian was decades ago, maybe even longer.

Maybe pay attention and read the other comments in the thread first before you type another stupid comment. He will be the first athlete in the WINTER OLYMPICS to compete openly gay. Also No one has ever said that just because he is gay he should win a medal. We are just saying he is a great skier who has the tricks to win the gold. He just so happens to be gay and his win would help the LGBTQ community.

Brutha, you are wrong. There has been many openly gay Winter Olympic athletes, the first openly gay one was over 20 years ago, so maybe he should do some work and pay homage to his predecessors instead of trying to rip them off... Also, Gus’ line of thinking is a bit outdated to think that ppl care what his sexuality is, like nobody cares anymore. Furthermore, the LGBTQ community is not about being “the first”, as that is something of a personal feat, rather than a collective.

Pay homage instead of ripping them off? What the hell are you even talking about? Being gay isn't some cool trend. Oh shit, those guys were gay, I'm going to rip them off and be a gay athlete too. That's not how it works.

People say "nobody cares" but that's bullshit. There is still a ton of prejudice out there. Luckily the ski industry has gotten a ton better but it's still there. And as far as the rest of America? It's definitely still there. Go to a bar and drink 2 beers and listen to some of the fucked up shit people say.

I don't think Gus gives a fuck about trying to be "the first". It's not about that and he knows that. Sure maybe that's how it's getting pushed in the news but that doesn't mean Gus is saying that.

There really aren't many openly gay action sports athletes. That's just a fact. Having a good role model is pretty fucking important. When everyone gets to that phase in their teens where masculinity is everything, and it's such a fragile line. A lot of people look down on gay people, talk shit about gay people. You can say "that's just how it is" but that's bullshit imo. It's like saying racism is fine because lots of people do it. We're moving in that right direction, but we aren't there yet.

It's fine if you don't recognize that, it's fine that you have never been hassled about your sexuality, but don't fucking tell me that "it doesn't matter". In 2017, things have gotten a ton better. I can't even imagine some of the shit that went down in rural America a few decades ago. That said, there is still a long way to go. If being gay doesn't matter, it doesn't matter, and from the shit people say, the way people get hassled, it clearly still matters. There are plenty of middle aged bigots out there that need to die off before we'll even get close to that.

I've been harassed in the work place, I've had people try to fight me, I've lost friends, etc. This is all in the last 7 years. Having somebody that represents gay people in a positive light is massively important. Even for people who aren't gay. If you're growing up and somebody that's gay is killing it at skiing, maybe all fags aren't pussies. Maybe being gay doesn't matter. Maybe there's no reason to harass a classmate, a coworker, etc.

Role models aren't always for people in a similar spot. Seeing people that are different from you, maybe people that you have irrational opinions about, seeing them killing it in something, maybe that can change your mind.

If you grew up with only white people, maybe you think all Blacks, Asians, Latinos, etc are bad people. That's not because there's anything wrong with those groups, but because you don't actually know those people. Representation matters. If you never see those groups, especially in a positive light, your chances of changing your views are much more slim.

Having somebody who's gay in a position like Gus, is important. If you can't understand that, it's your problem.

When people say "Fuck that, being gay doesn't even matter" I wish instead they'd put an effort into crushing the homophobia around them. I think they would if it actually wasn't an issue.

If you're tired of hearing about gay people, make it a none issue. Make it to the point where being gay isn't shocking. Where being gay is as interesting as what beanie somebody wheres under their helmet.

Until then, it's not that gay people are making it an issue, it's that people are still uncomfortable with it, and that's their problem. People get butthurt that people come out. "Why are they waving it in peoples faces? Why do they feel the need to tell people about their sexuality?" If it wasn't an issue it wouldn't matter. What those people want is radio silence. It's not that people are tired of something that isn't an issue, it's that they're uncomfortable and would rather not hear about it.

Why do I tell people I'm gay? Because if I don't convince chicks I'm gay, they won't take the hint that I don't want to fuck them. Because if I'm with a guy people will be shocked. "Omg I didn't know you were gay, that's so crazy!?!?!?!" Because it's part of who I am. Why do people talk about what kind of food they like, where they work, that they have a girlfriend, etc. Those people are such assholes for mentioning things about themselves! How could they!?!?!?!?!?

The whole "What you do in your private time is fine but don't make it my business" is bullshit. If you're homophobic, that's you're problem. If gay people make you uncomfortable that's you're problem.

We're going in the right direction, but people that say "it's 2017, shut up! Nobody cares that you're gay!" are full of shit. They're the same people that have been saying it for the last decade. I'd love for it to not matter, and if that's something you want? Make it happen. Call out the homophobic bullshit around you. If that's not something you want to do, there's your answer of why "it's still an issue".

Sorry for the TLDR. I just hate that people bitch about how it isn't an issue, but do nothing to make it not an issue. That doesn't make sense to me.

Back to the regularly scheduled thread action.

As a Brit, it will always be Woodsy. Having skied in the UK freestyle scene extensively over the last two years and seen the passion and progression the Brits get on what is essentially a skatepark fires me up so much. That man is often the only guy in a competition (I know there are other brits killing it) who grew up without a legitimate ski resort in his own country makes me so proud and always makes me wanna see him come through. Talk about stories, Woodsy has one. There's nobody I'd ever rather see with a Gold round his neck than that beautiful British bastion.

Henrik gives back so much to the community and has been with it forever. I want him to be our ambassador. Gus would also be great to see because he is one of the most well rounded skiers out there and could use his marketability to get a bunch of new blood into the sport. I also want Antti Olila because I love watching him ski. Henrick for gold, Gus silver again, Antti bronze
