Lol it definitely isn’t always fun. There are the moments that make it worth it tho

The people that have the biggest influence that are looked up to the most are the local dudes. If you're good at park at any east coast mountain every kid is going to want to be like you.

I think there's a lot of young skiers out there who want validation for their skiing, either in the form of sponsorships or in terms of followers and likes. I think you lose a lot of creativity when your trick selection is dictated by whatever you think your followers will want to see, and when you use whatever songs are trendy. I've seen so many reels with Miss the rage, for instance.

I think some of the Votaw hate is kind of warranted, if you consider the impact on his young audience who may be inspired to chase clout online, producing as many short reels as possible while being uninterested in filming actual videos (ie on youtube, NS) which have a lot more longevity. That being said, I don't hate Luke, and I've never met him. Just not the way I would prefer skiing to be represented, but that's just my opinion.

Not really getting the Durham Jones hate. Not a huge fan of how his insta clips are edited but he's got pretty good style and trick selection. Definitely far from the worst skier that someone could look up to.

There's a shit ton of stylish skiers that kids can look up to these days, and a lot of them are pretty prominent on instagram. And as someone mentioned, kids will always be looking up to local skiers. There will be kids who try to follow in the steps of bruce oldham but there's also gonna be a bunch of kids watching the new forre video, so I think they'll be alright.

Not wrong. Durham grew up a mogul kid (probably with money) and transitioned to freeskiing when he was young and flexed his age for years. He was surrounded by people at carinthia, sugarbush, sunapee, and more naturally acculturated him into a core east coast scene while he also attended ski academy at the same time. Add social media into the picture and all of a sudden he knows exactly what’s cool and what’s not when it comes to what to wear. Meanwhile he learned so fast and in a structured manner resulting in horrible style(imo). He’s probably out of touch as fuck with the real skiing community but appears as if he is it, but because of how he was influenced and appears, kids start to look up to him now as he’s older now and it all makes sense because of all this.

that kinda all sounded negative but no hate to the kid, he’s a dirty skier and was just into one scene but was actually in another and is kinda goofy but so are most skier kids from his era. He’s really not that bad compared to Luke which I won’t go into.

at the end of the day though they both rip and are just having fun so kids looking up to them isn’t the worst thing (assuming they’re good people in actuality) even though it won’t be as good for the culture as to where influence has been now and in the past.

Luckily we got young snow and others emerging too…

you do realize young snow goes to the same academy? many others have, the gnoza brothers, bode raffa, mac forehand to name a few. It’s fair to assume they’re all privileged, but imo it doesn’t take anything away from the skiing. they all have distinguishable styles, along with trick selection. Money shouldn’t have anything to do with style, i’d agree most academy skiers are very stiff, spin to win. But i’ve seen many kids on ig from Minnesota who also ski stiff as a board and spin 2 con 6s in every ig post.

Im just tryna say focusing on someone’s financial state as a way to critique them in a sport that’s already inherently expensive & inaccessible is quite dumb. There’s plenty of stylish wealthy skiers and non wealthy skiers. Same goes with less fortunate skiers.

Y’all feel free to hate on peoples style or skiing including my own. But bringing money into it is lame imo.

Sry for the rant op^^ this isn’t only directed at you as it’s a common theme on NSers and i once felt the same way.

The fun part is the clip when you get it. So rewarding. Best feeling ever. Even if it’s something small.

The way I see it - you can have advantages in life but you’ve still got to step up to the plate and deliver. Formula one is a prime example. Look at Nikita Mazepin and Nicholas Latifi

Ik you weren’t directing most of that at me but I wasn’t no trying to bring money into anything more than just explaining in part as to how Durham was socialized to be who he is in skiing, repping what gear, what style, connection to culture, etc. And that doesn’t always translate with wealth either because young snow, the gnoza’s (at least Sam idk as much about Charlie) and some others are actually in touch with the community Durham is appearing to be in. It is just more likely that factor and ski academy make you less connected to real ski culture in general but definitely isn't always the case.

but yeah going to the financial level in anyway is pretty low and irrelevant, def would like to see less of that on ns

This is true but in the opposite way. Street skiing is awesome unless you don’t get the clip.

Y’all need more shenanigans with the homies during the process if you think it all sucks until you get a clip.

just about every time ive filmed it’s with one or two other people so there isn’t much to do while tryna get the clip

way more fun the few times people actually showed up to help with the bungee lol

Durham knows style just chooses to do some things that are wack (in my eyes) but overall still a super talented rider. Definitely got his own thing goin on tho I can tell when it’s his clips regardless of a kit. That in itself is hella respectable regardless if you fw their riding or not.

fuck luke votaw. Very poor social media presence can make or break someone even if they have a large bag of tricks.

I think kids are gonna start not looking up to just pros or whoever has a bunch of IG reposts but anyone instead. Whether it’s a small name older head at their home hill or a random homie they discovered that just grabs clips for fun.

as it should be.
