White imac help

I have a white imac that has been the familys computer for the past 6(?) years. Its really bogged down and overloaded with music and years of documents. I do realize i could have a shop wipe it but id like to do it myself. i do have an external drive to put photos and other important files on but i have never restored a computer. So my question is should i try to do this? (is it easy?) and could i update it to lion? or a newer os.and help would be great, thanks

There is alot of tutorial on youtube about it ! but when I tried it my external hard drive wouldn't want to back up my files

hmm, okay. i was looking around and found thishttp://www.ehow.com/how_5852122_restore-imac-factory-settings.html now i have newer macbooks.. would i be able to use one of the disks from a newer macbook to reboot with so id have the never OS??and again thanks for any help and k+
