Whistler WSSF Big Air...Cancelled.

Big-air contest right at the base of Blackcomb, in the heart of the village. Big kicker, big crowds, live-music, dueling DJ's, dual fire-balls in the gap...usually the primo event at the 10 day party that closes out the winter season up there.

It's the single biggest draw of the 10 day festival, and has been a pretty good venue for up and comers and the big names to throw down at the end of the season. Evidently "Sue" decided that it made sense to cancel the contest late this winter in order to "shake things up." IMO you "shake things up" by making the premier event even better, not by canceling it long after most people have locked in their vacation plans.

Sucks big-time for would be spectators - must be twice as lame for would be competitors, particularly locals.

Think Sue made a bad call on this one? The public messageboard is here and Sue, whatever her faults as an organizer is, to her credit, responding to input there.

when i think of the wssf i immediately think of the big air, thats what i always make sure i see when i have gone up. not impressed to say the least

definitely a bummer, such a fun event but I heard masters is going to be at the bottom of the mountain this year so hopefully it will be easy and fun to watch

Oops - forgot to include the feedback link in the first message. Here it is:

The masters should be cool, but if it's held during the day I think that the vibe will be way different, and most importantly - you'll have to stand around when the lifts are running to catch it. Nice thing about events in the evening is that you can get a full day in, and still enjoy the show after.

if that's true, than the big air not happening wouldn't be that big of a deal.

but really though, i'm not sure how the winter was on the coast mountains, but here in the kootenay's the snowline as, for the most part, been around 1500m or so pretty much all winter, anything below that level has had either shit snow or rain during precip events... making the lower elevations have a low snowpack and shitty snow conditions.

if that's the case on the coast mountains as well, than I fully understand why they would scrap the big air at the village. I mean, it wouldn't be the first time they didn't have the village big air at the WSSF. I think it was that oh so shitty 04/05 season where they decided not to do the big air and did a slopestyle instead.
