Which is faster?

Me and a friend got into a big debate type thing over this in school the other day:

Which goes faster, a golf ball as hit off a club, or a baseball as hit by a bat?

you decide
 
with a baseball, you use the same amount of energy in your swing, but you need to use most of the energy to stop the baseball in the air and change its inertia. the golf ball is already stationary, so all the energy can be expended on the ball itsself. plus, golf balls bounce so much better than baseballs, meaning they spring off the club faster
 
Actually I have seen a bird somewhat explode, however:

You can never "poof" a bird with a golf ball like you can with a baseball because the baseball is bigger and therefore has more momentum.

Just throwing this out there, but I remember something about a high club head speed for a pro golfer being something over 300fps. Unless somebody can correct me. I dont know about a baseball bat
 
now add in the fact that a dove can fly up to 60mph top speed or something close. Thats abouit 2/3s as fast as a good fastball. The bird was probably going more like 45 or 50, but still, thats over 100mph, anything can blow up a bird at that speed

i case you havent noticed i started this thread for me to argue with people
 
Well first of all, let's tak a second and think about how much more mass a baseball has. Obviously the baseball would do more damage. There is no debate about it. The golf ball will travel faster because of its overall design and sedantary position.

Think about a foam ball hitting you at 50 mph...now think about a solid ball hitting you at 50 mph...which one will hurt more? duuuuuuh

golfball fo sho. i saw on a morning show some long drive contest guys getting clocked on their swings and it was well over 200mph. i don't know about pro baseball players, but my swing is well under 100.
 
definately a golf ball. cause if you think about it golf balls go like 300 yrds and baseballs go about like 200 maybe
 
No dude. Every force has an equal and opposite REaction. So even if your bat was stationary the ball would still get energy in the other direction. But I would still have to say golf ball.
 
The reaction you refer to is the exact same amount of force that is applied to make the bat move, however, when that force is applied to the ball, the affects are different then to that of a golf ball. The force exerted in relation to the bat or club is equal, but with a baseball some of that is used to change direction.

The reaction is not the movement of the ball, but the force appled to it.

have you ever seen a golf ball actually hit a bird

and actually baseballs cant be hit much faster than they are thrown so their top speed is probably around 90-100

id have to say golf balls go much faster they spring more and are smaller = less resistance and more initial speed= faster
 
it has to be a golfball, outfielders can run fast enough to catch baseballs. i dont think anybody could run fast enough to catch a golfball
 
okay golf clubs are much longer than baseball bats. Plus they flex which makes the clubhead go even faster because it whips around. The length and flex of the shafts will make the ball be hit even harder. Then take into account how much heavier a baseball is than a golfball and how much more force it takes to get it moving. If that didn't make sense then look at it this way.

A golf ball can be easily (almost all the pros on tour can do it)driven over 300 yards. Thats 900ft. The longest home run ever hit was only about 600 feet. Golf balls are faster.
