Which Camera? Canon 5DS or Mark IV?

So I'll be saving up to buy one of these cameras. I shoot mostly photographs so the 4K video with the Mark IV wouldn't be necessary, but would be nice to have for the future when I start to venture more into videography in the coming years. I currently have no experience with video production. I'll be going to school for Multimedia Technology, which is an ensemble of photography, cinematography, business, advertising, graphic design, web design, among a few other things. I'd like to someday work for an outdoors company (Outside Magazine hit me up please for an internship) doing marketing for them. I'd also like to do some of my own personal landscape photography and sell prints, so the 5DS would be nice with the 50MP sensor, that way I could make massively large prints and not have the quality degrade much. Would the 30MP sensor on the Mark IV for sufficient for making large prints? They're both $3,500 dollars for the body. With the 5DS I'd have the option for shooting cropped pictures at 1.3x and 1.6x.

For the photographers out there, which would you choose if you were planning on shooting primarily landscape photos with a chance of selling prints?

What do you have now?

You could spend way, way less money on a camera.

I currently shoot with the Canon SL1, so the base level Canon DSLR. I look at it as an investment in my future career.

i would suggest you save money on your body (ie buy an older 5d, 1d or 7d) and spend your money on glass. If you wanna invest money in your future, buy glass not bodies. Bodies change every year, glass stays the same.

An ARRI ALEXA mounted with Angenieux's Optimo 24-290 f/2.5 is what you want.

Small and light but capable setup.

I've been dropping a ton of money on glass in the past year, I just bought the 24-105 f/4, I also have the 50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.8, 28 f/1.8, and the Tokina 11-20 f/2.8. I just like the thought of the 5DS for the resolution, as I have access to making free prints at the college I'll be going to, so I can easily make 4' by 5' prints, with tons of wiggle room.

You can make 4' by 5' prints with like 10MP you dont need 50....

do you have many canon lenses? may wanna take a look at the sony a6300 or a7r

I would love to switch systems but I already have 6 lenses for my Canon, so switching would be rather expensive.

5d4 is going to be more versatile with 7fps and video

I've been thinking about that, but I just can't see myself needing to shoot anything more than 5fps. If I were out shooting wildlife and saw something I needed to capture quickly, maybe, but I'd say most of my photos are landscapes, some people, some architecture, plants, and animals, none of which are moving very fast, except for my puppy that is. So most of my subjects are still objects, so while the video and 7fps would be nice, it wouldn't help me out much.

Seems like you're really young. High school? To me it seems like the benefits outweigh pidgeonholing yourself.

I'd actually be a junior in college if I wasn't taking a year off from school.

I agree with eheath, I would buy a 5d MII or MIII. You have a lot of lenses do you have a 70-200 or a telephoto? You just bought a decent 24-105mm but I would spend between 1500 to 2000 on a new body then go buy a used 70-200mm f2.8 if I were you. Unless you have a serious need for 50mp then I would get something older.

Totally agreed here. Buy a mkiii or a 7dmkii and a 70-200 2.8 with that $3500. The percent of people who actually need 50MP or the mkiv is practically zero. You can make damn big prints with 22MP. Don't get caught up in the MP war.

Why buy an older body if new technology and better bodies are coming out each year?

Glass is a lot more important. If you don't have the best glass then there is no point in buying a newer camera body.

If his budget was like 6k I would say go for it buy whatever body and get some nicer glass so you have a variety. Cameras don't have that drastic in changes, yes some do, but most do not. You can get a great image with an older model as long as you know how to use it. Why spend another grand plus on a camera body that doesn't have that much of a drastic difference.

I work with some great photographers they have access to a 5dsr and only use it when that photo is going to be used on a banner or billboard, they always use their 5d's mIII

I have the 5dsr. I would get the 5dmk4. the 5ds really isn't meant for video and it was added as an afterthought. the video isn't any improved from the 5dmk3 and actually lacks some important ports and Jack's needed for video (I don't remember which) I will say that 50mp resolution is incredible. When I made my first print at 20 by 30 inches at 300dpi my mind was blown. truly insane amounts of detail. but I'd go with the 5dmk4 because you mentioned video and the 5ds is really just a stills camera. PS you don't think k about it now but the files that the 5ds makes are huge and take forever to load in Lightroom and Photoshop. also space becomes an issue. on my 32gb SD I have enough space for about 362 photos before I'm completely full.
