Which Back Protector?

That one for sure, way more comfy than the vest style ones(speaking from owning both styles), and protection is still really good. Love mine.

Yeah don't go for a vest style one, much more cumbersome. I like being able to just throw on the frame based one. Go with the one in your first post

I swapped from the spine bug to the vpd vest, and trust me, there is NO going back after that. The vest is far superior.

Wear my one everyday, all day, always has been, always will be. It has saved my back from breaking at least once.

i ended up just buying this one on amazon for 100 bucks hopefully its good and protects me i think i might do a review video when i get it, because i haven't seen any such videos on youtube or anywhere

I found the Bug version to be very uncomfortable. It always slid up my back and I had to push it down, and it just was uncomfortable .

That's why I got the Spine vest, and that one is amazing amazing, I can't seriously tell that I wear it.

But when you get yours try it on, and if it doesn't feel 100% good, change if for something else.

Uncomfortable back protectors are a bitch, and can ruin a whole day.

Just made a review its my first ever and its pretty shitty, ill try to embed it in a little i just have to upload it to youtube and figure out how to embed

I've tried that POC in a shop and it just didn't feel comfortable. Dainese stuff is really breathable but very expensive for the protection it offers and they aren't very durable in my experience. The rivets/poppers that hold the plates to the padding and vest seem to fail after a bit of abuse.

D30 stuf performs well in tests, even when compared to rigid armour. I use products (Forcefield) that use D30 inserts on the elbow and shoulder and they're the best I've used for this so far. However, their back protectors are thick, heavy and not very breathable; fine when its cold but I wouldn't want to wear one hiking the pipe in Spring.

I use a back protector aimed at the motor bike market and its the best I've tried so far. Its by a German company called Held and this is the specific model I use:
http://www.getgeared.co.uk/HELD_9882_Motorcycle_Back_Protector_Waistcoat?sc=51&category=432573

It uses highly viscoelastic/shape memory foam. Like POC they don't make the padding themselves, they just put it in their products. Its a lot cheaper than the POC version, very comfortable and has great coverage of other vulnerable areas like the portion of your ribs directly below your shoulder socket, kidney etc...Its also less breathable than Dainese stuff but seem better than D30 based back protecots for ventilation and comfort.

I'd recommend looking at reviews in some motor bike magazines; these guys take their testing very seriously and actually look into the test results for the armour. Marketing is has its place when it comes too body armour buts it how the product performs under impact, reflected by lab results, which is going to determine whether its going to save your ass or not.

Some very valid points made, i've been wearing the POC body armor for the last couple of hours now and i even fell asleep with it on, its definitely noticeable but at the same time its a very light back protector and the only thing that i seem to notice the most is the waist strap but i have a feeling most of the spine protectors will have at least some sort of feeling like that.

Hey,

Hows the back protector? You have any more comments on it?

Close to pulling the trigger on some back protection. Its either the POC one you have or..

Still undecided on the vest/backpack style.

Thanks

I honestly dont know a whole lot about them, but it seems to me like everyone I have ever seen with one has POC

Yea i fell on it pretty hard this weekend for the first time and it still hurt but i could definitely tell it protected me, it was like at first when i fell it shocked me and hurt but then as soon as i got up it was gone right away I'm definitely happy about it.

Ye it wont protect everything :p , but you definitely feel the diffrence when you fall if you wear a backprotector

POC VPD and Komperdell CROSS are the best ones out there. Certified for road racing even, pretty damn good...

I went with the cross myself since it felt more comfortable on my back.

Thanks for bringing another brand to my attention. I hadn't seen the Komperdell brand before.

Since seeing more of the "Vest" type have more padding around the ribbing and collarbone, I'm way more swayed to go with a vest than the POC one regardless of how it'll feel. If I can get more protection for the roughly the same price and still feel comfortable, i'd be stupid to rule it out.

Think I might have to get this one sent to my parents house in England and shipped to me in the US for a xmax gift I'll try and blag my mum for.

Looks legit.

The cross-vest I have looks a bit different, the back protection is in three pieces, smaller up top, big one for almost all the back and a small one in the bottom for your tailbone (I don't know if that is the correct word in english?). Also for collar bones and ribs. Doesn't interfere with any movement and pretty much feels like you're wearing a tighter hoodie.

The VPD-vest is just a single piece of protection and, for me, it did move upwards when I moved around, bringing it high enough that it touched my neck men I tilted my head backwards (which really is super bad for hard plastic back protectors and could lead to neck injuries).

I just picked up a scott back protector and used it thanksgiving weekend in mammoth. I have to say it was really flexible and i couldnt tell it was there EXCEPT the shoulder straps rubbed against my neck

One of my friends has the VPD vest and reckons it's the best thing since sliced bread.

I ride with a Scott one, it's comfortable, unobtrusive and I reckon it's taken a couple of good hits for me.

DOn't know anything about them other than what their site say. The site says it's a class 1, which isn't as good as Komperdell, POC and others that is class 2

Pretty much everyone here in Europe wears one, at least everyone who freeskis or races. When I spent a season in Revelstoke in 09/10 no one except the Euro-guys wore one and I couldn't understand why. It has saved my back a couple of times, I'd rather ride with back protector and no helmet than helmet and no back protector - but that's pretty much because I damaged my spine ten ears ago (which left me on the ground, not being able to move half of my body for a minute or two) and it scared the shit out of me.
