Where to do it all (Ski, mtb, surf, longboard, kayak, flyfish)

I am loosely considering doing a gap year in NZ and I realize that there is great terrain for of these activities all around the country. However, is there one particular "hotspot" where I can find all of them within a short drive? Thanks, TBL

Queenstown or Wanaka for everything but surfing and Dunedin or Christchurch for surfing trips (but get a wetsuit, its gonna be cold). Dunedin is about 3 hours from Central Otago and Christchurch about 5. Also, Christchurch has just had a massive earthquake so it might not be too good there for a while

You can technically "do it all" here in my hometown of Thunder Bay. The skiing is crap though, and the biking is good, and people do surf lake superior. Kayaking and fishing would be good.

You could do practically all of that around the central North island area for alot cheaper rates and accomdation. But hey it's a rubbish place, only people with money go to the south to soak it up.

this, got it all, and some, but have to travel to Dunedin for good surf... but still, Wanaka.
