Where should I move

Hi!

So Ive been living in Breckenridge for about 2 years now and i'm ready for a change of scenery. I'm looking for a ski town that has decent affordable housing (not Jackson or Aspen), nightlife and a good size mountain (or even a couple within a 1-2 drive)

Id love to hear everyones personal opinions!

You'd probably like Whistler. The Alps check those boxes too. Most places in the US are going to have their chill spots a lot further from the slopes than they are in Breck. You'll be driving to the hill to shred and then driving somewhere else to party so it might be a culture change.

Shit around town here in Whistler is honestly CHEAP AS FUCK with the US dollar being strong Im spending nothing on food and going out isn't too bad either though I need to take most nights off due to only being able to do work in the morning before slopes open b/c of the time difference. Id recommend Aspen over Breck but its impossible to find somewhere to live and too expensive.

Tahoe is chill but there isn't much nightlife by the slopes theres shit to do at night and places to party but its completely unrelated to skiing.

Killington Vermont

Season lasts six or seven months

Mountain isn't that big compare to west coast but has 6 peaks around 150+ trails , 8 parks; endless events and a seriously good nightlife scene. Housing is cheap ; there's endless ski houses always looking for new members .

Bozeman.

You are looking for Bozeman.

Except the nightlife is meh, fun downtown bar scene but no clubs or city vibes.

Apparently everyone in the US is ignoring Gaylord, Gaylord fucking rocks

I too, suggest Gaylord Ski area and resort. So many jobs, a ton of nightlife...just a great scene all-around.

If nightlife is in her top 3 than she is not looking for Bozeman. Also, affordable rent is debatable, which might have something to do with people moving from Calorado.

I'm not sure if you've ever noticed, but Rutland is a shithole.

Burlington however is a pretty cool town. Stowe, Smuggs, MRG, and Sugarbush are all within an hour and Jay is an hour thirty. Jay's annual snowfall is the same as Bridger or Abasin.

All my friends that go through Durango have great things to say but I would imagine the nightlife is somewhat lacking.

I think I would do park city over SLC

Mammoth/Tahoe.

Mammoth has the longest season in the US and the nightlife is decent... housing is affordable but can be tricky to come by. There is a ton of employee housing though.

Tahoe has all the things you listed. I like Tahoe. I like Mammoth more because it's a bit less pretentious (not the residents... everyone else... Tahoe residents are lovely), and you absolutely don't need a car in Mammoth (public transportation runs every 10 to 20 minutes from 7:30 am to 2 am... you can even get to skin happy back country on public transit). If you think Breck's public transit is convenient... Mammoth's is even more so.

The one thing about Breckenridge that I do love is that everything that is worth going to is really compact. In Mammoth it's almost that way, but there is no designated pretty main street with all the lovely shops. It's spread out, but everything is completely walkable. Our village isn't at the ski resort, it's in town with a gondola that goes to the ski resort. So I could walk to the Gondola from my house and I could walk to all the bars, but it's not pretty like Breck. Tahoe is pretty spread out. The affordable areas require a bit more effort, but if you like driving, that's fine.

Go to Whistler! I did a couple seasons out there and loved it. You're also American so it will be dirt cheap for you to live there since our dollar is so fucking bad right now.

How is the drive from Bozeman to Big Sky?

Did you get a work visa? or how did you make that work.

My next move hopefully is to Crested Butte. Night life isn't crazy, but i like the fact that its still a relatively "undiscovered" ski town. Not over run by tourists. Great community. Also the fact that it has an unreal summer season as well. Mountain Biking, hiking, fishing, camping, all of it!

Do not do Killington. Like someone else said, you will most likely be living in Rutland, which is about 30 min away depending on which part of town you're in. Rutland itself is a shit hole. It is the smelly, diseased ball sack of Vermont and everyone knows it.

If you're going anywhere in the East, make it Burlington.

I'm Canadian so I didn't need a work visa to go to Whistler - you'll need one though. They are easy to get but take time to process so do it soon if you plan on coming this season.

That's one of the most bullshit statements I've read in a very long time.

Alrighty then. Please, in all your infinite wisdom, enlighten me as to a ski town where the housing situation isnt straight fucked. Cause based on my own experiences and talking to other people in ski towns all over the US, its damn near impossible to find halfway decent housing thats affordable

Everywhere has something. Doubt it would be ideal in most circumstances, but affordable housing definitely exist everywhere.

Anywhere that isn't situated at the base of a mega resort. Pretty much every ski town in the Kootenays for example is very affordable. I've never paid more than $400/month and I've lived in some very nice places in 5 different ski towns around BC.

Hell, even Whistler can be just as, if not more affordable as living in Vancouver, but I admit that Whistler ain't cheep.

If you're idea of an acceptable ski town has to be something high end (summit county, Jackson, Aspen, etc) than of obviously it's going to be expensive to live there. With no knowledge of actual prices for accommodation I'll go out on a limb and say that places like Bozeman (not exactly a ski town, but whatever), Crested Butte, Silverton, Kalispell/Whitefish, Sandpoint, and many others are affordable. Hell, SLC is probably more affordable than many other urban centres in the country and its got fantastic skiing right on its doorstep.

Noob two bedroom house five people I think we're planting like $120 a month each.

whistler,

like that dude said about the dollar you'd get a lot for your money. theres city like clubs here and local bar scenes as well. literally endless things to do in whistler in the winter and summer. you get access to whistler and blackcomb, not to mention the BC access is amazing! theres 3 parks and their legit as. housing is kinda expensive but not as hard to find like it would be in breck.

While I agree Rutland is a shithole it's a solid 20 minute drive from killington and is not killington. It's the closest major city to it. And why would one live in Rutland when there is endless housing in killington that endless ski transplants live in year round. Different town different scene.

That being said Burlington is a major ish city that's pretty cool and has access immediately to lots of dope skiing but isn't a ski town per say and doesn't have ski town nightlife like killington.

Killington has a MASSIVE ski house network that has huge parties all season long and if you're in the network it's really dope.
