Where do people stay in Jackson?

I'm moving up from the minor league in a year and getting the hell out of the Midwest.

I've decided on Jackson Hole as the new stomping grounds but all I've heard about is employee housing. I'll be able to get into town early to find a job but I don't know where to start with places to stay.

Any advice would be appreciated, I don't have any problem with several roomates and extremely shitty rooms.

They don't.

Jackson is in a housing crisis, a lot of people live in Driggs or Victor. But don't come here it's the worst.

Some obviously make it work. I'll live in my car if I have to.

Hah, sorry, but housing there is insane, that's why you live across the pass and drive over for work.

Come out, visit, do some sleuthing, and figure out what works for you. Erica, Errrka, Valhala, and many more NS'ers live / have lived in the Hole, hopefully one of them will weigh in at some point.

You won't want to sleep in your car..winter in JH is very, very cold. Housing is kinda crazy in JH like Cy said, but you're right some people make it work. I'd look on TGR, keep looking on NS, and just look on Craigslist or other sites for apartments/houses.

Where are you planning on working? The mountain or in town?

Also, if JH doesn't work out check out Bozeman or SLC. Bozeman is still kinda scarce on housing but SLC has more than enough housing for cheap, and tons of killer terrain comparable to JH, if not better in places.

Bozeman is not as difficult as Jackson, but is extremely hard to find affordable housing in as well.

You our should have been looking for Jackson housing in March.

I thought about working at the mountain to take a shot at employee housing, but if they require a commitment of more than three days of work per week, then that's not an option. I'll be in Jackson for a family vacation at the end of February to check it out.

SLC is a good idea as well. I'm not spending more than a year in Jackson so that's definitely possible for later. I also think I could make it into Utah for school if I want to.

You don't, you live in Idaho.

Source: A midwest transplant.

Don't attempt this move without:

1. A trust fund

2. A girlfriend (she'll leave you for someone way radder once you get here though)

3. The ability to dink copious amounts of beer & whiskey.

I kid, it's hard to get here at first but once you make it, you'll love it.

Teton Valley's garage sale on facebook is where I found housing when I first moved out.

Have about $2500-$3000 ready to go for a first month, last month, deposit. As Whitling said, the housing is fucked and it's becoming fucked even over here.

We were forced out of our last home for not being a family, all in an effort to keep the "ski bums" out.

We (I) told the HOA we were gay and after investigation they deemed that to be not true and made us leave.

If you need any help from a former Midwesterner hit me up!

I'm also a former Midwesterner / Jackson transplant!!

1. Having savings seriously helps as Goku said, the First/Last/Deposit sucks. (In ads it will be the acronym F/L/D or FLD. I didn't catch that at first, ha).

2. Yeah, it's impossible to find housing. Once you know a lot of people it's a little easier, but still not easy. I lived in my van for the first summer.

3. Car life / van life is fine in the summer, I would do it again and you save a lot of money. If you end up taking this route, shoot me a message and I can give you tips from someone who had no idea what she was doing.

4. In the winter you can rent hotel rooms monthly for not super expensive, and when it's too cold to make your car work (which it is)

And yeah, Idaho is always a cheaper option if you don't mind driving the pass. But Jackson is so fun if you can swing living on this side....

and when you get there, the JH Daily is free and people actually use the classifieds. Good luck!

You will not be able to make it here working less than 3 days a week...

Awesome, I appreciate the help! I'll definitely get back to both of you when I have more questions. I'm still in the early stages of planning everything but very excited.

I was recently emailing Greg, the manager of "The Hostel" in Teton Village. He told me about the monthly rates, which are $1,000+ per month... way too expensive without splitting with a roommate, but if I get a job there its $2 per night. He even allows a flexible schedule for employees to ski or board as much as possible. Everything about it seems too good to be true. I was wondering if either of you know much about the place or anybody that has worked there.

Hostel is a great way to do your first winter. I've never lived there but plenty of friends have over the years. You'll meet fun people, party all the time, and have the opportunity to ski all ~130 days inbounds. It's small dorm style 2 person rooms on the top floors with your own bathrooms but only one shared kitchen. Mostly young 21-24 y/o skids. Pretty ideal for your rookie season.

When are you moving out here? You say "in a year" but do you mean for this winter? Timing is key for lining up jobs and housing. Try to be here in early Nov for your best shot at what you want. Good luck!

I'll be graduating high school in May of 2017 and I could move out there any time between June and November. If I can get the job at The Hostel in the summer I would be stoked to move out there in June and save up money before the season and have everything set up.

But I guess I can't depend on one route, so I'll research a lot and get out there early either way.

Don't move to Jackson to save up money.

Live with your parents for a summer and work your butt off to save up money.

This.

The two things that don't happen in Jackson are:

1. Getting Rich

2. Meeting your soulmate (if you're a dude)

Ehh, that's what right hand is for.

Girls are a lot better man. Move to Jackson, drive a few hours down to poky and pick yourself a girl here. There's quite a few that would move up there with you.

I moved to Jackson from WI too! Currently in OH tho :( I also lived The Hostel life for a few seasons. Skiing just about every day, and living for cheap is a hellova way to ski bum it! You can housekeep or work the front desk, both options allow a ton of ski time! Its pretty damn cool to make friends with all the guests that come through and play tour guide with the cool ones. Expect to find a night job somewhere if you want to have a little extra spending money, but there are tons of hotels and resturants that are needing bussers/servers/dish washers/ect.

Usually the first season is the hardest, but after youve met people and made connections 'affordable' housing options will pop up. I will say that being 18 in JH may be a little boring unless you have a decent fake. Tho if you do work at The Hostel youll become good friends with the guys at the Moose.

Feel free to ask me any questions you may have!!

I have a spot at the hostel and I'm tempted to go..

I had some troubles with getting a school loan so id thought id apply to the hostel in case i couldn't go to school. anyways, today i found out i have the job if i want it, but i also found out one of my school loans got approved today. school is probably the smarter choice but its tempting. sounds like you're gonna have fun sconnie

How old are you? Nothing wrong with taking a gap year and doing something that you have always wanted to do!! Most of the rest of the developed 1st world does the same exact thing. Who knows, your whole college plan or major will change. The Hostel is a great way to spend a winter that for sure!

Yeah it's probably best that I'll go to school. Got the loan and il be down in Reno skiin at Squaw/Alpine. So it will be sick. But just getting the job and reading up on stuff makes it sound fun. Really thinking about trying to do it after my sophomore year or senior year of college.

Trust me on this, either do it before school or after. Once you start power through the four or five years that it takes to wrap up college. Just saying that loan will always be there you can trust me on that. At 29 i could go for my masters and even with my shit ass credit and outstanding college loans, banks would be fighting to give me a loan. They make money off saps like us.
