WHEN DOES NS BUY NEW SKIS -- or retire a set of skis

i usually wait for really bad edge problems, but on one occasion i upgraded because my salomon 2012's felt dead and lifeless (in addition too lots of edge missing). so it takes me a couple seasons to wear out a park ski, but my scott punishers had the edge tear out on the second day, so i'll see how long that lasts. . .

I've had a pair of 2010 AR7s that are pretty rugged but the best ones I've had are the 2008 (I think) AR6s. I've beat the piss out of those and they have been retired to my teaching skis and urban skis but are still holding strong. I have also never blown an edge out of a pair of Armadas for what it's worth.

its really a factor of how hard you go. people say "maintain" whatever the fuck that means

if youre sending it huge onto rails then the edges are gonna be tearing out in no time. I fucked the absolute shit out of a pair of rossi scratches in 25 days, and had to ski them for 25 more days before i could get skis. 12 inches of edge missing on all 4 sides WITH the sidewalls separating from the bases

obviously better skis last a little longer but if someone is saying their park skis lasted them 4 years they plain and simply just do not go hard

I just got a pair of ar7s and I fully intend on beating the shit out of them. Itll be interesting to see if they can last me a full season

Bought armada alpha 1s at the beginning of last season. Fell out of my unlocked ski rack at 55 and minor scratch was all on the top sheet of one ski. After skiing them all season they held up perfectly. Thinking they will last me 2 more years. Armada is expensive but the skis are bomb proof, saving you money by not having to cop new skis every year

Mattsaff still has a pair of '03 K2 Public Enemy's that he breaks out in the backyard and even on the slopes a couple times a year. Literally no edge missing, theyre bombproof.

Well i ripped out my edge on my s4'in 30 days i believe, and i snapped my dominos in 20, but that was my fault since i underroaed a backflip into slush and my tips just dug in. But my warranted domains should last me for 2 years, just hope i don't crack my edges on the first day like i did last time...

I buy at least 2 new pairs of skis every year, along with rent and tuition. I just have a pretty damn good job. Really though, if you can't afford a 400 dollar pair of skis every year you should get a better job. It's really not that expensive.

why on earth would you buy new boots every season? I have nightmares about those first few weeks of breaking in new boots.

Its funny, I find myself stocking up on skis whenever I find a good pair for cheap. For instance right now on ebay someone is selling some 2012 Line Afterbangs for 130 in my size. I already have a fine pair of skis mounted, a pair of heads still in the plastic wrap, but its such a deal. I HAVE A PROBLEM

still riding the blue volkl walls from 2009, some good ass park skis. not that a good ass park skier is riding em, but they've held the fuck up through it all

No park ski will last longer than a season unless you ski like 30 days a season, and dont touch rails. or just suck

Used to be when there was more p tex than base material.... But working in a shop, you cant help but buy new ones every year. to much ski porn around

When your skiing 50+ days a year you go through skis like water. I went through 2 sets of skis last year and got a new pair this year. But then again I throw down every time I ski.

I usually use 1 pair until they're 3 yrs old… then they become the ones I use for urban and woods riding. I use the new ones in parks until they get too old

I replace the gear when I think that because I am using it it has compromised my performance. So I ride my skis for a LONG time. But the moment boots become uncomfortable then I get new ones. I generally get new boots every season.

I dont know of any ski where the edges last for more than 30 days without tearing out if you are throwing down on rails.

This is the thing... you really don't need to replace skis very often if they don't suck. I swear everything On3p makes is good for 200+ days. Same with a lot of other companies.

I retire skis when I don't find myself using them anymore. This takes forever. For example, I have a pair of 2003 Seth Pistols that are being retired this year. They're still rideable, I just don't use them as rock skis anymore. My 05-06 Pollards are probably on their last season.

I buy new skis when I can justify it in terms of filling a gap in the quiver. This year was easy; I decided I wanted a lightweight touring setup that would handle pow, so I got some Drifts with Dynafits and BDMo skins. Next on the agenda is a more serious, harder charging touring setup, which may entail BG Tours or carbon Megawatts with Dukes or Beasts. There's always a particular role for a ski I'm buying that I envision for it. And I usually think about it for a year or more before doing it, rarely do I impulse buy a ski.

people underestimate how fucking harsh east coast/midwest groomers are on skis. Fuck a lot of the time we're skiing on ice chunks that shit does some serious damage.

Then add the beating from all the boxes, rails, etc.

I can see most skis making it a year regardless, but easily see why some people need to get a new set each year.

The threat is probably Salomon's least expensive ski.

Basically a foam core kid's ski made in adult's sizes - you get what you pay for.

I don't ski park so skis usually last me a few seasons. Usually they get beat up by rocks and stuff. My groomer only skis last me forever tho

My last pair i retired after part of the edge had fallen out and i'd rockered them after taking a big crash on a pow kicker. Would've got some new ones sooner but was crazy broke.

Once I break them or get bored(in that case ill sell or trade those). Any given season I normally replace each pair once or twice

I take good care of my pow skis, but still ski them hard. Repair them the same night as they get damaged (unless they need to dr) Im on season 3 with my Bent Chetlers and they feel the exact same as day 1.

Park skis are totally dependent on how much I actually end up skiing park that year, but I can usually stretch a couple seasons.

I usually get new skies every 2-3 years but use the old pair for urban or kicking around in on a shitty day.

If you look at the prices of park skis in comparison to beginner skis you'll notice that the park skis would be around the same price.

Now compare the park skis to intermediate skis- You'll notice now that intermediate skis are slightly more in price

Finally compare park skis to advanced/ powder skis- You'll notice a price around double for the powder skis. Why? Because park skis are made for the 1-2 season. The company knows you'll damage them beyond use so they put a cheap price tag on them so you'll buy them more often.

A powder ski, on the other hand can last years and years and years. There is also more material going into the powder skis so obviously; a price increase.

Each ski type is made with an intelligent price tag.

Beginner- Mediocre 300-500

Intermediate- Decent 500-700

Advanced- Outrageous 700-1100

Powder- Outrageous 700-1300

Park skis- Cheap Cheap Cheap 300-600

Now these are just estimates on price obviously there are skis that don't fall under that price range for the skill level of the ski.

My current skis have delam in both tip and tails//ductape

sidewalls missing from both pairs///YOLO

Edgess//lullzzzz

No life left//fuck it

bindings broken///fuck it

I like to ski as much as I can out of one set, which would last me about 2 seasons, then use the money I've saved or that time to buy some banging skis and outerwear

Usually my skis are finished once the years over. I just bought Rossignol Experience 88 and I'm hoping they last a little longer though.squidoo.com/best-skis

All of your three posts are in the same thread

when ever i see a pair of skis that i really like i buy them. I work in a ski shop so its really cheap.

and i ride the old ones until they break and mount bindings on the new ones and ride those until the break.

My Liberty Morphics 11/12 are on their third season here in Australia. I love them and they're so durable. Admittedly I don't thrash my skis as much as other people, I only just got into hitting kinked rails but I've been sliding rails for a while now. I still think I'll be able to get a couple more seasons out of them.

>When do I get a new pair?

Whenever I can.

>When do I retire a pair?

I don't, I just add to my quiver. Right now it's K2 Extreme, K2 Obsethed, and Surface Lab 001, and I'll probably be adding Dynastar Cham 127 this summer (though I probably won't have money for bindings for a while).

i will ski a pair of skis until they are almost completely unskiable. since i spend 95% of the time in the park, i need to replace my skis about every season.
