What's your major?

Geology.

Graduating next year. My interest in it has sadly decreased over the last two years.

Also with oil prices so low and the mining industry not doing so hot, I'm thinking of doing another bachelors in sustainable energy engineering as I'm finishing this one...

I don't think I could do a masters in geology.

Good idea, you'll at least be able to live yourself. Also environmental industry is going to be a gold mine in future years so there's that.

Currently an environmental studies major and minor in economics.
 
school is bullshit and a waste of money now that the internet has democratized information and has recently become easily accessible

but i go to school for computer science with a minor in film

Making a career decision based on the current price of oil sounds like one of the poorest decisions I have heard in a long time. Oil prices fluctuate, it will be up and it will be down. Nearly every source says the price of oil will be back up by the end of the year.

If you don't want to do geology because you aren't interested, great. But don't use the price of oil to justify it.

The very first thing I said was that my interest in geology has gone down over the last two years...

I'm not basing my decision on the current state of the economy. I know that the oil industry is very cyclical.

However to get a job with just at Bsc when I graduate will not be easy, and I'm not interested enough to do a masters.

Not sure where you get your news, but unfortunately I don't think prices will be back to where the were by the end of the year. However there might be a rise in prices towards the end.

When I first started university, I was debating between geology or engineering and I should have picked the later.

Yeah, I saw that... sorry, wasn't trying to come off as cynical, I was more trying to comment on using oil prices to rationalize your decision.

I work around (not in) the oil industy and I see a lot of people speculating on this type of thing (oil price) with a lot of misunderstanding. I also don't think it will be over $100/bbl at year-end but I do think it will absolutely go up a significant amount from the $50/bbl it is at now, I would think $80/bbl at year-end is realistic. I can provide more rationale but didn't really feel like hijacking this thread with a debate on oil prices. I will tell you that it takes years and years to develop an oil field. As you said, prices are cyclical and oil companies understand this. They don't completely pull the plug when oil price takes a short-term down turn due to a supply shock.

Anyways, good for you for following your interests. Definite props.
 
I got my bachelors in Ecology and Primatology (yes, the study of monkeys). I'm currently in the interview process for the Canadian Coast Guard Navigation Officer training program (which would give me a second bachelors in Marine Science as well as my ship's officer cert), but if I don't get in I'll start applying for grad programs focusing on either aquatic or community ecology.

Well im not really sure where you go to school or what year you are...but it really starts freshman year ESPECIALLY if your at a non target school for those companies. Basically I went wealth management, then the next year got a credit internship (insanely lucky) at one of the top banks, and then from their junior year it was a lot easier to get noticed cause I had some serious brand name companies I networked my way into.

But if your at a non target school expect to maintain a 3.7+GPA at a minimum.

Plus banking internships pay insanely well. My sophmore year internship paid 15K for 8 weeks and my banking one paid 15K plus a nice signing bonus.

Way to late right now to get into one of the large banks/companies spots have been filled for months. Best bet is to reach out to boutique banks (very hard this late in the game) and local branches of wealth management firms, etc.

Mechanical Engineering at SUNY Buffalo, starting to focus more on Mechatronics and Robotics later into the program, really compelling stuff
 
I graduated with a bachelor of social work in 2012 and planning on going for my masters in the next few years.

Yea man. Great website and has a ton of insight into the world of finance especially from a college kid / mba / recent grads perspective. The only thing that I hate about that website is how smug everyone in their really is. They bash anything that isn't investment banking at a BB or a top elite boutique.

That being said...if you can filter through a lot of the BS its an amazing source to get direct info on a certain type of job, company, etc. Made some job decisions based on that website and couldnt be happier

i took a geography class to meet a requirement in college, and it was awesome stuff. i was surprised at how interested i was in it. GIS is cool too, our teacher would try to get anyone who did well on a test to switch majors to do GIS stuff

A buddy of mine just graduated with a fine arts degree and hooked up a gig where he travels around with a couple other artists painting murals for businesses. Not the best for long term but still kinda cool he found work in his field.
 
Going to CU this fall, as of now in Mechanical Engineering, though may enter civil or something more geo based. Looking to pick up a business minor/certificate as well.

Not really......but kinda of.

On a sererious note, its a great school with professors who are incredibly intelligent. Everyone knows what they are talking about and they are super helpfull.

The ski scene is pretty good. Considering you are an incoming freshmen you should join a the ski and snowbaord club. I have been on the executive board for the last 3 years and we pretty much re desinged the whole club. The kids that will be running it next year are all cool people who shred and like to have a good time.

What are you planning on studying?
