Whats the secret to hitting steep sidehits?

Can never seem to hit those really steep sidehits while keeping it clean and i just dont get it. Popping and ollies only does so much for balance and yet some dudes just seem to ignore gravity.

Are you talking like the sketchy over vert feeling ones? Sometimes just absorbing the kick. Honestly sometimes I just avoid the really bad dished out ones where it drops into a vert wall.

yeah like the ones that just send you high but not far. The ones that are so steep that they send you backwards to where you could flip without doing anything

Damn yeah. Some of the one get ridden in so badly because of the traffic.

I stopped flipping random ones because they were so fucked some times.

Like anything good skiers can do stuff off anything but some of the shitty side hits will buck you.

Staying centered and smooth, the harder you pop the less control you have. Conversely, gently absorbing the lip gives you more control

you kinda gotta pop as it bucks you / pop a little early

along with the advice others have contributed in the thread, i think its important to realize that some features/side hits have a speed limit whether its takeoff or smooth landing. sometimes going a bit slower will get you more air cause you can pop better

There isn’t a good way to hit stuff like that cleanly, when the side hit is tiny and wants to send you into a backflip I just skip that shit.

pop like you're on a vert ramp, find some other side hits or grab a shovel and tune them the way you want

Just send it. Try to think of it like this, 20% pop 80% absorb. If you give it too much juice you might jump backwards. If its like a vert wall.

Side hitting is an art. Having a keen eye for it goes a long way. There are a few types:

Rollers: unlipped feature with a steep slope behind it. Straight line an pop.

Mergers: when one lower elevation run joins with a higher one. Groomers do a fantastic job on it. Line up the side and pop

obstructions: stuff like treelets, rocks ditches. They tend to be steep transitions and require more “diving board” like take off.

My favorite is the woops bumps. A straight line of bumps. Its a great place to learn take off and absorptions. Remember to always stay on the tongue of the boots and never on the heels
