Budget?

If you like Golfs have you considered 4-motion sportwagens or Alltrack?

4x4 sprinter is the best vehicle for a ski bum though.

Well currently im looking to spend less than 5k and ill keep those in mind while looking, tge vehicle will also be a daily driver to work and school until I graduate

I mean if we're talking like actually bummy and not mummy won't buy me a new car after I totaled her Corolla then literally whatever 3k shitbox 4x4 has a drivetrain in decent condition and has the least rust

+1 for the foresters, get them with the headgaskets already replaced, can sleep 2 people in the back if you're cozy, great in the snow, and the first generation was only sold as a manual. XT manuals are sweet and with some work can smoke sti's, but theyre expensive and finding manuals is hard af

1st gen toyota tundra. Find one with the frame done, and just like any toyota they run forever.

I just bought a new Tacoma and it’s pretty bomb proof. The bells and whistles are a bit overwhelming but the resale value alone justified my purchase.

I've been happy with my 05 Toyota Echo hatchback I paid $1000 CAD for 3 years ago. Very reliable and cheap to run/keep on the road. I'm 6' and I find it's more comfortable than similar sized cars. In a pinch I can sleep in it. I've driven it across Canada, Newfoundland to BC and back and still going strong but for some rust. Put a roof rack on it and go.

I wouldn't down vote a truck per se but the Chevy Colorado is pretty bad, especially that '02-'10 or whatever years with the crappy 5-cylinder which is probably what a 5K budget would net.

Love my delica. Probably the most affordable 4x4 diesel vehicle there is!

Can’t find any good photos on my phone, but it is primo for a ski bum. I’m gonna be living in it this summer.

Take 5k and use it for a downpayment on a good used car as opposed to buying a shitbox.

It's awesome not having a car payment though. If I had a secure job and making enough where a few hundred a month wouldn't hurt that's the only case where I would do it.

This is true. If you just have 5k, get what you can, but a car thatll last 10 years is far more valuable than something that might last 3

5k is plenty if you wait for the right car to show up on the market. shitbox is like sub 1.5k. there are gems that need only minor and easy work popping up all the time at 5k.

At 5k its all about being a smart buyer. Di some research on the vehicle for reliability and such. Maybe buy a 4k car and spend the rest on head gasket, water pump, and timing belt. Takes more work but reliable cars can be found in that range.

Subaru people are a special kind of autist. Spend 4 or 5k on a car, just to pull the engine to do the headgaskets to make sure it's reliable?! Nah dog. This ain't it.

Worth it to have a vehicle that drives great in the snow, has enough ground clearence for most 2 tracks, can sleep inside of, more than enough cargo room, and gets decent gas mileage. Was skeptical of the subie hype til I bought one and now I understand.

You just described a crv, pilot, rav4, highlander, etc etc with extra headaches.

I kinda get it with the peeps who want a car that goes 'pshhh' when you let off the gas. But an NA subie for a ski bum these days? Nah dog. This ain't it.

Subarus are great cars until they break. They drive really nice in the snow. They have enough clearance for SOME 2 tracks but honestly aren't the pick if you go deep on public lands. You can sleep inside of some of them, but if you're tall your only option is a pre-2010 Outback. Good cargo room and good to great gas mileage depending on your driving style.

But BiffBarf is still right, those Hondas and Toyotas are more reliable in the long run.

You and biff are not wrong. My forester is just a great fit. I bought it cheap, all the classic subie problems have been fixed in the last 5,000 miles so I sohuld be good for awhile and it gets to just about any public land here by me in Michigan. I bought it right and have no regrets. Just wish it was a stick.

Don't get a forester. Hondas and Toyotas are far cheaper on parts than a Subaru. I can't even describe how much money I've dumped into my 2nd gen Forester and it only has 146k miles (spoiler alert: I haven't had the head gasket fail on me since I bought the shitbox almost four years ago). Had it break down on me twice in the past year and I'm already planning on saving money to buy a used car in full by the end of the year once I start working again.
